Hi all!
I have a HP Pavilion DV5000 (dv5178us) with Lightscribe CD/DVD burner. Last weekend something very strange happend: the drive disappeared from Windows XP Explorer list. Just if had it removed, the drive letter is gone, scan for hardware changes can't find it but it seems to be working, when I load a disc it spins up, the let blinks, everything.
Tried to boot with Ubuntu (Linux) to check for a Windows issue. It worked once then I got the drive back in Windows for a couple of hours and suddenly it was gone again. No message in Windows, no yellow exclamation mark in the device manager, nothing. And now I cannot boot with Linux.
Looks like a hardware failure but, hey, guess what?!?!?! 1 year warranty finished just a couple of weeks ago.![]()
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Arnaldo

update your drive or reinstall your drives...
and there is a little scre that lets you take out the drive i belive...
i didn;t try it though. also if it still reads and write stuff, i don;t think you need to worry about the drive issue.. -
The same thing happened to my friend's DV5000. The DVD/CD drive disappeared. I tried fixing it by reinstall the drivers but no luck. I even did a Windows clean install from an external Hard drive since it doesn't read cd's, to see if it was driver/software issues but it still did not came up. My friends warranty expired also and I think he told me that when he called HP they were charging him around $200 to replace the drive. He bought an external dvd/cd drive a month ago, but if there is a solution for the problem it will be nice to know.

Go to device manager and uninstall all cd/dvd devices AND secondary IDE channel. Restart twice and see if this fixes the problem.
CD/DVD drive disapeared
