I have a DV1340US and the CD rom has stopped working. It no longer shows up in My Computer and in the Device Manager it says that the drivers have been loaded but the hardware cannot be located. HP sent me another CD rom drive and it has the same problem. If I put the Windows install disk in it does read it upon restart. Any idea on what may be going on?

If you go to the BIOS setup, does the CD drive appear there? If not, then you my have a motherboard problem. If it appears there, then it could be a Windows problem.
If it's a Windows problem, try deleting/"uninstalling" it in Device Manager, then reboot. Windows should detect it and re-install the drivers after reboot. -
Yup, Windows problem. If you can't fix it the way Fill2k said, then I'd just restart and restore it. Having a fresh install of Windows is always nice, but make sure you backup your important stuff through a thumbdrive or external Zip/CD burner.

Once, stupid as it was, I removed the SCSI/RAID controllers and Windows could no longer detect my DVD. If uninstalled its drivers, Windows would just install them again but no drive ever appeared. I couldn't reinstall the Scsi/raid controllers because it did not accept them and so I had to reinstall Windows. Fortunately, the DVD drive did work without Windows and I was able to load the OS from it. So... you may want to reinstall Windows

I guess I'll do the re-install...I already tried everything else listed with no luck. The bad part is I just re-installed Windows about a month ago...(Believe I had some type of virus)...And everything was working great prior to this CD Rom problem.
CD Rom no longer working...
