    Found the following while searching and they offer a solution,however there is no update for WIN dvd 9.0 on their website under drivers and downloads!!

    DESCRIPTION
    Surround Sound option is unavailable after selecting HDMI as the default audio output.

    SCOPE
    The specific notebook PCs affected by this issue are listed in the Hardware Platforms Affected section at the bottom of this advisory.

    RESOLUTION
    To resolve this issue, please update to WinDVD version 9.0 or later.

    Does this mean we are expected to buy the upgrade to fix a problem in version 8 which comes bundeled???

    I saw this too, but it confused me. I thought HDMI only carries stereo audio... Could someone confirm or deny this suspicion.

    it will carry 7.1 dts HD MA or 7.1 dolby HD audio among all the older formats...
    HDMI has a higher bandwidth than say a toslink fibre optic cable.
