Hey guys, I got a dv6t a little over a month ago, and after downloading AMD drivers to solve THIS problem:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-pavilion-notebooks/587406-dv6tqe-screen-issue.html
(I actually sent it to HP to be repaired, but they were of no help. Turned out it could be solved in a few minutes by downloading drivers.)
I had another problem. I wanted to buy the original Call of Duty, so I downloaded a demo (I always do this to test if a game works on a computer before buying.) When it installed and I launched it, it gave me an error message:
"Could not load OpenGL. Make sure that you have the latest drivers for your video card from the manufacturer's web site."
I downloaded the latest drivers from HP's site (even though I think I already had them from solving my last problem.) That did not fix the problem. I downloaded another CoD demo from a different site, but that one had the same problem. (UPDATE: Call of Duty United Offensive demo also has the same problem, but CoD 2 does not.) Every other game I've tried so far has worked fine since solving the black bar issue. What should I do? Also, after the error message a box with this comes up:

Is there a video options menu in the launcher? If so, see if you can change the renderer from OpenGL to Direct3d.
-
How do I check that? Can you tell me the steps? (I'm not a genius at computers)
Thanks -
NoahesFrio - the game is probably running OpenGL, which has compatibility issues with our system.
We can't determine how to change the renderer to Direct3D unless we actually download the demo. I would recommend you open the demo, and see if there is any settings option that allows you to change the option, but I doubt it has it.
Another thing you can also try is changing the compatibility settings of the game since it is such an old game. To do this, right click on the executable, go to properties, go to the compatibility menu, then change the compatibility to XP or Vista -
I replied, but the site ate it. Is there a launcher that pops up before the game tries to start? Like when you doubleclick on the icon, does it immediately try to launch the game, or does a window pop up with buttons to click?

Probably SOL until the BIOS fix for GPU switching comes out. There were some companies that were slow to embrace Direct3D and stuck with OpenGL for a long time.
-
Any idea when that fix will come out and how we get it?
-
Not exactly sure when, but it will likely be available via the HP site. There's more information in the switchable graphics thread.
-
One other thing you might try is setting your Windows resolution to 1024x768. Give that a shot. Probably won't work, but it's worth a try.
-
I tried that, but it didn't work.
-
You should do what the message says and update your intel drivers. As well, COD is pretty old... it'll run fine on the intel graphics.
-
Then you'll probably just have to wait. What it looks like is happening is that the game is searching for a discrete GPU, but the dGPU isn't kicking on because the renderer is OpenGL. When the game fails to find a dGPU, it shuts down.
-
-
It doesn't have anything to do with the intel graphics. It's a Windows 7 issue. You can either wait for a patch to come out, or go dumpster diving for an old box and play it on that (like you're supposed to).
-
Are you sure of that? Are you saying CoD will not run on any Windows 7 computer? Because a quick google search shows that people can play it on Windows 7. The error message clearly states the problem is related to Windows 7.
-
It is a Win7 issue, but it doesn't necessarily need to be fixed by Microsoft, it could also be fixed by Intel in their video driver, but they decided not to. Probably because not enough people have bugged them about it.
-
Are you forgetting about AMD?
-
Since the Intel GPU is what handles the desktop, then Intel should be responsible for proper switching. If the Intel drivers don't switch early enough and don't expose that there is another GPU in the system that supports the aforementioned graphics mode, games not programmed with that technology in mind will simply shut down.
-
TBH, I don't know why you'd want to play that game. The gameplay isn't superb and nobody plays in the multiplayer anymore.
-
This fixed the problem:
HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors) HP Pavilion dv6t-6100 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
(See switchable graphics thread for more info.)
I ALWAYS KNEW YOU WERE WRONG HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!!!
Call of Duty will not work
