After a fresh install of Vista 64-bit, which drivers did you install? I can't seem to figure out two things that remain unknown in the device manager. BTW, I also installed the Intel wireless drivers from www.hp.com but I can't seem to find the wireless device in the network settings...only the LAN connection shows there. Any ideas?

Unfortunately, that's not an option for me at the moment. I need to stay with Vista.

Lack of 64bit drivers is why I stuck with 32 bit. Do you need 64 bit?

I see you have 2GB RAM. Why would you want to move to 64 BIT?

Ok, I ditched Vista and installed XP Professional. So far so good. With the factory install of XP, the computer booted with about 55 processes. After my clean install I am down to 25. :)

Are you going to try out SP3 now or wait? I want to see what happens when other 8510p laptops get it. I already did some testing and found increased start up times, but that doesn't seem to be the norm. Also how fast are your start up times right after a clean install?

just clean install my new 8510p with vista business 64 bit and don't have any problem with device/driver issue. got my all my driver disc from hp. Does your unit comes with it? HP also sent me vista business OS disc 32 and 64 bit. I clean install it twice because the first one had me an a yellow warning sign for my HDMI. Got this problem when i made a windows update and include all these optional driver update.
For the second try, I install all the drivers from the disc and update all the drivers from HP website then made a windows update. I hide all these optional driver update. So far so good my computer is very stable.

Isn't Vista 64 offered as a factory option on the 8510p?

Did you install each and every driver on the CD or only selected ones? How many processes do you have running on a fresh boot?

BTW, installing from the provided driver CD is the same thing as downloading and installing the drivers from www.hp.com?

Should be as what i read in the other review but not in my case. I don't have the option to choose between 32 and 64 bit when i first fired up my notebook so i installed the vista business 64 bit

At the first installation i installed all the drivers provided even all those recommended and optional software except for the norton ( i'm an avid fan of avira ) . But saw in my installed program that there are some drivers which i don't need. For example is the WLAN, i also installed a driver for broadcoam but i'm using an intel WLAN. Even the installed the hp WWAN.
Sorry didn;t checked all the running processes after the fresh boot.

Should be the same as long as you know which driver to which component. Time consuming though. But if you don't have the driver cd from hp i suggest to update from hp website. BUT BEWARE, read very carefully all the tabs, like description, installation instruction, release note ( very very important to read the fine print read it twice ), fixes, revision history ( don't go with your urge to click the highest version on the history, that's for a different product range had almost downloaded it and f***d up my installation ,
First thing you should do when you update anything from the hp website is the bios. be sure for put your battery in and with the power supply plug in. I read before in some discussion somebody cannot boot up their computer after the bios upgrade so i was hesitant at first telling to myself "don't touch the running machine" ( this is my motto since i'm a machine service engineer and my motto always save me from screw ups ) .
Anyway i'm on the receiving end ( customer ) and my machine is still under warranty so i head on do the bios update. During rebooting after the bios update I was very uneasy, seconds becomes hour to meand ALAS my computer is working fine after the bios update.
    Wheeeewwww!!!!
    Kindly keep us updated

    Cheers

Which drivers are you using for the GPU? HP drivers, ATI, or some third-party ones?

i'm still using the driver from hp for compatibility and reliability of my system. Anyway you can try to use 3rd party driver can revert back anyway to the original driver.
Reason i stick to the manufacturer's driver is just in case i encounter some hardware problem with my noteboo for the first few month then there will be no questions ask if i'll send this for repair/replacement.

That is weird. Mine doesn't show HD temps and that I am told is kind of normal, rare but normal. Are you sure you have the Graphics Drivers installed?

Ok, I have installed the folowing drivers yet there are still 2 devices that are "unknown" in the Device Manager:

    HP drivers for GPU
    Wireless drivers
    Fingerprint reader drivers
    Sound card drivers
    Ricoh drivers (for card reader)

I have not installed the drivers for the following devices because Windows detected them automatically and they are working fine:

    LAN
    Bluetooth
    Quick launch buttons

Anyone know what the 2 "unknown" devices could be?

Not sure as it downloaded 26 optional updates. I think it was HP Drive Guard and maybe updated Quick Launch drivers that fixed the 2 unknown devices.
