I have a HP Pavilion 6100 CTO and still can't find a way to disable those annoying loud chirps/beeps from the Quickplay buttons (Noisy everytime I adjust the volume.) I've read about people comlaining about this on every review on most 6000 topics, but have never heard of a fix other than that mention on the Cnet review. HP Customer support has new clue how to correct this after a few hours of chatting with them...unless it's in a software update to Quickplay and the bios that don't work on my system (I can't install the newest driver because of error 151, whatever that means.) Does anyone know how to disable these beeps?

    Hey Forss,

I have been trying to figure this out as well. In CNET's review of the dv6000t, they mention it can be disabled. This is the paragraph I'm talking about:

"Like all Pavilion laptops, the dv6000 includes a row of light-touch buttons above the keyboard that launch the media player and provide volume and playback controls. We like the sleek look of the keys, but we hate the beeping that indicates you've pressed a button; the sound can be disabled, but doing so is rather complicated."

I tried emailing CNET, as well as the author of the article, but got no response.

Somebody please help, because the sound really is awful!

And while we are on the subject, how do you just disable the quick launch buttons completely? I have a dv9000, but it has the same style touch buttons. They drive me crazy because I hit them accidentally all the time. I tried to disable the driver, but it just reinstalls itself on the next boot.

They say you can fix anything with duct tape and WD-40, and I'm about ready to cut a strip of duct tape to fix the problem, but there's got to be a better way. :D

(The real solution for me would to have an option in the quick launch setup that requires the fn key to be held down first. But I know that's not gonna happen)

And while we're on the subject of QuickPlay, isn't that supposed to be the feature that let's you play a DVD without booting the OS? Because when I press the QuickPlay power button or the DVD button, it simply powers up the laptop. What's up with that? Did I delete the magical QuickPlay partition when I got rid of the recovery partition?

When I press the Quickplay button on my dv2000 it powers up the laptop, flashes up the WinXp startup screen, and then displays the 'Quickplay' screen, the one with the large icons along the bottom.

The main difference is that there's no X in the top RH corner to allow you to exit into Windows. i.e. I don't think it does a full load of WinXP, just enough to run Quickplay.

In your situation, does it just power up the laptop and go into windows normally? - Does normal Quickplay work for you? (e..g if you put in a DVD to play, does it go to the Quickplay screen?)

Yeah, mines broke too. I removed my recovery partition and then did a repartition also. I'm guessing I hosed mine. Mine just boots up windows.

No QuickPlay screen, just straight to my Windows login. I just mirrored my drive with Acronis, and it detected what I assume is the QuickPlay partition as a 1 GB partition and backed it up, so deleting the recovery partition doesn't seem to have altogether killed it. Oh well, not a big deal. I didn't buy it to watch DVDs, but it might have come in handy once in a while.

Does anyone have a guess on where the beep is coming from (software or hardware)? I can't find the sound in Windows to disable it, and it doesn't seem to be connected to the QuickPlay software. It's infuriating even more because if you plug in the earphones it still beeps! So if you adjust the sound on what you're listening to even with headphones in it will still make that loud chirping noise.

Well, keep an eye on BIOS updates from HP for your respective laptops to disable the key sounds. HP just released a update BIOS for my V3000z which has an option of diabling the key sounds...

    I just got a DV6770se.

There's a Control Panel Applet called "QuickTouch" that lets you set the sound to a less annoying click if this is not the default for you.
In the BIOS, there is a option in System Configuration called "Button Sound", with a "Disabled" setting.

I booted up ubuntu-7.10 live cd and the volume and mute work right out of the box, with on screen volume display, although the mute button doesn't change color like in windows. (but hey, i'm getting a life, so what do I care?)

Now, what I would very much like to do is stop the stupid QuickPlay button from powering on the laptop. Why have a depressed power on button, that needs to be held down to power on the laptop, right next to a touch sensitive button that just requires your hand to lightly brush over it for power on. I have accidently powered on the machine while closing the lid. What a pain. I suppose it'll require a BIOS update.

    1) Run msconfig
    2) Under startup, there are two items, one called HP QuickPlay, the other called HP Quick launch buttons. I think it depends on the model you have, but for me i needed to disable both of these from starting up. If you have other buttons, such as play, stop, FF, mute etc, these will not be affected as these are system buttons.
    3) The buttons will still beep if you push them, so if you want to turn this feature off, you can simply just restart and go through the BIOS, where there is a feature to turn off the sound for buttons.

QuickPlay cannot run by itself without starting windows if you have a Windows Vista machine. It only works on Windows XP because HP wasn't able to make it start up on its own with Vista because of issues.

The button sound can be disabled in BIOS. Hit F10 when the HP splash screen appears when you first turn on the PC to get into BIOS.
