My old hard disk died, along with all my personal stuff and Win xp system. I made recovery DVDs with HP backup utility. Can i install Win XP on my new hard disk using these DVDs and will they repartition my new HD to to have the original layout (C: partition for system and D: partition as my recovery partition) and revert my system to the state it was when i first powered up my laptop?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Recovery DVD will make the system as it was when you bought it.

it probably will unless there is a size difference in the hdd's-- you didn't mention if it was a same size replacement.......

Even if it is a different capacity drive, it should be okay as long as it is the original system.
