I have a laptop (HP DV6000) that I don't have a power supply for (it requires 90watt max, the spec says 18.5-19v DC 3.5A-4.74A). Can I use a more powerful power HP power supply from another laptop (from a HP HDX18T with a 120watt 18.5v 6.5A power brick) to power the smaller DV6000 laptop?

I'm someone more experienced. And here's the deal:

Yes, you can use a 120W adapter for a laptop that only requires 90W.

But, you'll ruin the life of the battery inside of said laptop. In that case, you'd want to remove that battery when using the 120W adapter, or just realize that you'll drastically shorten the life of the battery keeping it in place.

What is the theoretical reason for the battery life to deteriorate?

I am not disagreeing with you, just want to understand why it is so since the voltage provided by both the power supplies is the same. The difference is in the wattage to meet the more robust demand on power for the newer/larger systems.

I have not used the larger supplies for the smaller ones but have used the smaller one for the larger one. In that case, I've noted the full recharge time for the battery to be higher. I did not note any long term deterioration in battery performance.
