I want to remove the broadcom card from my dv5000z as the linux support is terrible and it really makes it unusable for me. I've found an intel 2915 card which should work great in linux, but does HP restrict what cards can be used in the machine? If they do, is there any workaround to this? I've seen there are hacked bioses for some older IBMs that allow you to do this, is there anything like this now?

I suppose if you want to physically take apart the system and try to remove the card, you could.
But you have two other options.
1) Find a USB wireless dongle (not adapter with a base and a wire) that works under Linux.
2) Don't use Linux.
You can use a Broadcom card in Linux. Plenty of people over at the Ubuntu/Kubuntu forums have got their own running. That and the flaky ATI drivers (big surprise there) are what keep me from using Kubuntu. -
The Broadcom card is easily removable. It's right in the memory compartment. Why not just buy a PCMCIA wireless card?

If the intel card is in HP's white list, you should not have problems swaping the cards.

I don't want a pcmcia or usb wireless card because I don't want stuff sticking out of the side of the computer, I rather just replace the internal one so it's always there and working.
Where can I find HP's white list that lists this stuff? -
These 2 links might be useful...

The whitelist is located in the BIOS and differs depending on the model. HP wont publicly release any of these details. -
Great find Miner, obviously HP's list has been ..'managed'. The second article is the funniest, problem solving computer article I've ever read
Bookmarked.
Can I switch the wireless card in my DV5000?
