Hi, I have the dv7t HP laptop, with the Geforce 230M graphics card. From what I understand, some laptops have graphics cards that are not upgradeable without upgrading the entire motherboard, correct?
How can I tell if I can upgrade mine? And if so, how can I easily determine compatible cards? Thanks!

Sorry, but that is not upgradeable. The "M" in 230M stands for Mobile for laptops and it is soldered to the mother board.
99% of the laptops are not upgradeable, there are gaming laptops that are upgradeable, but HP does not make one.
HP does not make another MoBo for the dv7 other then with the 230M, with HP you're stuck with what you get when it comes to the GPU.

Consider then a DIY ViDock via your expresscard slot. It would be faster if you happen to have a port layout to be able to do a x2 link.

Thanks for your help!

Now does this include upgrading from the 1gig ATi Radeon HD 6770M to the 2gig version? Is the board soldered onto the dv6tqe-6000 series as well?

yes, AFIK the ONLY HPs with replacable cards are the Elitebooks.
