Is it possible to upgrade my current processor to a faster one. It is an HP DV9000t
    My current setup as follows:
    Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo processor T2250 (1.73 GHz)
    - 17.0" WXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1440x900)
    - 512MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7600

I find the current CPU to lack when playing games such as Command and Conquer and FEAR. CC Zero Hour stutters bad even with settings at low and CPU throttle disabled; FEAR is more playable with settings at medium. My ZD8000 with Ati X600 plays games better and it has the single core 2.8 CPU.

I would want to try the following:
Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 Dual Core Processor

It was an option when I configured/purchased laptop but am somewhat confused by the socket specs. The HP manual lists the T7200 as a part.
The processor I have reads as 479 socket (CPUZ). I have read several different specs on the T7200. Some list it as 478 and other sites have it as 479 (mobile processors)
Are there different ones out there (desktop and mobile) and what should I look for when purchasing the CPU. Does anyone know if there are differences between the sockets, maybe different flavors of the socket offered by Intel. I just would hate to buy a mobile T7200 and then find I needed a different model.
Thanks in advance for any advise.
I will of course remove processor before buying anything to verify type of socket (I have found CPUZ to off at times)

In my opinion you should be able too. they both use the same chipset for Core 2 duo.

As long as you buy a T7xxx or a T5xxx series Core 2 Duo, you will be fine. They are all mobile processors and are compatible with the Core Duo. The desktop variants use LGA 775.
