I am currently running a HP Pavilion dv8315nr Media Center Notebook PC with Vista Ulimate.

    Specs: 1.8 GHz AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile Technology ML-34, 1024MB 333MHz DDR (2 Dimm)

I want to upgrade the memory and CPU.

First the memory, I'm running two DDR333 512 sticks, and the specs on the laptop say expandable to 2048 (2gigs) so I'm wondering, if I by two 2 gig sticks, what would happen? one of the sticks just won't register?

Poo, cause that leaves me just buying two 1 gig sticks.

Alright, second with the ML-34, I was eyeballing upgrading to an MT-37 2.0ghz.

But, I found a MT-40 at 2.2 and was very interested in it. Same socket, 754 so I assumed it would work. I know they sold these notebooks at the time with up to 2.0ghz.

Also, I'm assuming this is right, I can't swithc to an X2 can I? Knew I should of waited.

Its hard to know with HP. Both max memory support and max cpu speed are functions of the BIOS. We have seen that recently they added 4GB bios support on the new x500 machines so I assume the previous models didn't have that support.

I would just buy the 2- 1gig sticks. From what I have read the BIOS might see as much as 3 gig if you use 2- 2gig sticks but to me that's a waste of money and there is no guarantee that it will see that much. Plus you don't know how it will behave with that configuration. As far as the cpu goes, you probably will not see any noticeable increase in speed going to a 2gig processor from a 1.8 gig. You are probably running XP on that system. If you are, going to 2gig of ram will not show a major increase in speed like it will with Vista. This is not what you wanted to hear but I would save my money and get a new x5xx series with Santa Rosa and dedicated graphics. Good luck

You can swap in a MT40 but it requires a nearly complete disassembly of the notebook. See the HP service guide (Downloads page for your notebook, Manuals link on the left-hand side).

4GB RAM... maybe, maybe not. You'll need a 64-bit OS to see all of it. I wouldn't spend that much on DDR1 memory. I'd go with a pair of Crucial DDR400 1GB SODIMMs (which will probably get run at DDR333 to preserve compatibility with lesser brands).

I just bought this last may, 180 bucks seems cheaper than a newer system. And did you miss the first post, I'm running Vista, have been for awhile.

I've disassembled the notebook once already, I'm not unfamiliar with doing it. This is my 3rd HP notebook. Although it's the first time I didn't buy from hpshopping.com customizing my options.

Think I'll just got with the 2 gig on second note, the MT-40 passed out of my hands.

Just gonna upgrade memory and hope I get 3 years out of this notebook.

I actually upgraded this laptop more recently like this:

    ML-40 2.2ghz Turion
    2gigs Gskill memory
    2x HITACHI Travelstar 160gig 7200RPM hard drives for a total of 320gigs

The extra memory, SP1 on Vista and the 7200rpm hard drives make this thing run like a whole new machine.

I think moving from the 4500rpm to the 7200rpm hdd has been the biggest improvement and usually is for notebooks.
