This process is very confusing and frustrating for me as I have no experience with this or graphics cards in general. :nah: Here are the specifications of my PC you may need to know. Tell me if you need anything else.

    10 GB RAM
Intel Core i7-4700MQ CPU @2.40 GHz (8 CPUs)
Intel HD Graphics 4600 1792 MB
    1TB HDD
4 USB 3.0 ports, SD card slot, HDMI port, Headphone in/out, Ethernet port

Tell me if my notebook is compatible, and also tell me what I need to buy and do if it will work at all. Thank you very much!

We need the HP Part Number to find what exact model your asking about? Also ext graphics is not worth having or getting. If you want better graphics get a higher end system that has a dedicate GPU.

Actualy it deepends on what you mean eGPU.
If it just external GPU to connect an extra display - there are absolutely no problems to use USB-DVI adapter. This kind of eGPU doesn't support acceleration and use resources of your main GPU to accelerate graphics (note: even you have good GPU u might experience little lag on dynamic images as it cant transfer a lot of changes over USB -> you experience throttling/lag)
If you want to connect GAMING eGPU - this is completely bad idea ... there are nothing good exists for this purpose. even you'll have 300W powerfull external GPU - you'll be limited by USB bandwidth A LOT. USB 3.0 bandwidth is about ~5GBit which is little above than 1xPCE 2.0 (3 GBit) or little less than 1xPCE 3.0(6 GBit)

Note: your device probably have capability to install dedicated (internal) gpu of kind: GF740m or GF840m

PS: even you can connect powerfull eGPU - you can benefit from it only in limited scenarios (e.g. intensive computations which requires a lot of computing power, but little data transfer)
