I have a HP DV7-1023 that I bought 2 weeks ago. I am about ready to return it any day now. I have tried to force XP on this thing for a week. Lack of driver support has forced me to go back and give vista a try. Vista was constantly slow or locking up, so I decided to try the 32bit version of vista. 32bit version was somewhat better, but still noticeably slower than xp. I was trying to burn a movie a few hours ago, and the lockups, or shall I say non responsive lockups returned. Getting very frustrated. Was about to list my old laptop on ebay, but might be keeping it now.

Can any new laptop be bought with xp, or easily converted to xp?

I also forgot to mention I tried Windows 7 Beta for a few days on the new laptop. Am I wrong for wanting the trouble free days of xp?

Lots of laptops can be bought with XP on it, but without knowing more about the computer you want it's hard to know what to recommend. Fill out this to help us out.

Vista itself should not be experiencing lockups - there is something wrong with your computer that is causing your issues. Vista 64-bit works very nicely on my T500, and it's definitely an improvement over XP in many ways, although of course I do have my dislikes.

Some vendors still offer XP-preloaded laptops (such as Lenovo, for its Thinkpad line) and, I believe, the Dell business laptops.

I agree with MidnightSun, you're computer most likely has some sort of hardware issue. I would investigate sending it in for warranty repair, and not frantically switch operating systems.

I know people are having issues with the vista switch but this isn't nearly as bad as the 98 to xp switch . . . . there were many more issues with compatibility and performance than the xp-vista switch.

Trying to cling to XP for dear life is like trying to cling to a corded telephone . . . might be easier but you aren't doing you're self any favors. When windows 7 is released it will be much more like vista and move even further from the xp platform.

I have a presario c500 with vista installed on it,it ran sluggish too,but $40.00 bucks later and 2gigs of ram and its like a new laptop. What a difference a memory upgrade will make.
As far vista goes it beats xp hands down......

First off, what programs are you trying to run? If they are older versions that you used with XP then they may not be compatible with vista. If its not conflicting software it might be drivers. Other then that, it may be hardware related.

As for Vista, I got my dv6500t running pretty decent with it but have to admit after almost two years, I still like using XP on my dinosaur desktop. Mainly because Vista's windows explorer can be considerably slower in managing large amounts of files or when deleting them. Transferring files is not as crisp either in my experience. The whole file system with its deep rooted DRM can show its ugly face and it does from time to time. But I would not put XP on a notebook simply because Vista does have better power managing then vista. I will however put seven on this thing when it comes out. I want the faster boots with less resources running and a superfetch that does not thrash so much!!

My recommendation is take your notebook back.. that's what that first month is about.. don't send in for repairs.. that's what you do once your months up. You want to try to get "a good one" from the beginning. If you want XP look at the business line of dell/HP etc.. Businesses have pretty much rejected vista good or bad and OEM's must still offer it on their business lines. Perception in the business community for vista is and has been catastrophic. My college just bought all new HP desktops with XP and they are screaming fast (business line). They all have the older 19" 4:3 displays and I enjoy working on them with my labs. Something can be said for the older display format and XP. I'm just saying I have been using Vista for a while and have it relatively stable on my notebook but in many ways still prefer XP so I am understanding to those that still want to use it.

First, as stated earlier you can still find XP pre-installed on notebooks but you have to look at a business notebook. Try here for starters...

    http://www.hp.com/sbso/busproducts_notebooks.html

Secondly, there are XP drivers out there for the consumer models but since HP does not "officially support" XP on these you have to look for them. There are many threads in this forum that have links to the needed drivers. I for one found them very helpful when I installed XP on my DV5t. It can be done.

Here are a couple links that you might find helpful. The first one is for the DV7 and the other two are for the dv5 (very similair hardware).

I strongly disagree that lockups or crashes on Vista are hardware issue only.

Probability of problem source with lockup and crashes with Vista is 9/10 driver and software compatibility and driver-hardware compatibility, not hardware failure or defect.
