www.crucial.com - go there and install their 'detector' which is a small java applet.

that will tell you how much ram on your machine, how many slots used and available, and it will also suggest ram options (512 mb, 1 gb, etc) which will fit in your unit.

it also tells you what speed/specs the ram to get should be - ideal website for trying to upgrade ram on an old computer when you completely forgot what was in it :-D

The 945PM can physically support upto 4GB, but will show a little bit below 4, about 3.5GB.

The 945PM chipset can physically support upto 4GB (unless the BIOS has been locked down). The notebook is old, and 2GB modules were not mainstream at that time, so that is why max RAM support shows up as 2GB.
With 4GB installed, you'll see about 3.5, else you can play safe and stick to 2GB.

i am not familiar with dv8000t memory slot, but I think it is possible. but if you have 32 bit operating system, only 3GB will be used.
That, except Vista SP1 32-bit, which recognise my memory as 4GB (Vista RTM recognise it as 3GB and so does XP SP3)

Update, I spent the time taking the memory out of the sager and put in the HP and guess what, it works, it shows 3GB due to OS limit but is much faster. I also got a new CPU a T7200 which help on loading programs :)
