I got my HP laptop, did a fresh install, and made one partition on the hard disk. All I have is drive C.
I want to make another partition but don't want to go trough the whole process of installing a fresh version of Vista with all the drivers because I have my preferences just the way I want it. How can I shrink drive C and make disk D?
- I've disabled the User Account Control
- Ran 'diskpart'
- Shrank drive C with the commands:
select drive 0
select partition 1
shrink desired=16000
- Ran 'compmgmt.msc' and went into disk management
- Created new volume (D)
- I right clicked on drive C to shrink it some more (60+ free GB remaining) but it won't allow me to shrink it anymore
It says "Size of available shrink space can be restricted if snapshots or pagefiles are enabled on the voulme".
What are "snapshots and pagefiles", and how can I disable it?

unfortunately you need third party software if you don't want to reformat
this is a good one

partition magic is better. however it doesnt come for free

Awe bummer, you really can't do it without reformatting?
Edit: I read somewhere that to disable snapshots and pagefiles, you need to turn off system restore. I'll do that and report back if I can shrink the disc some more.
---No good, it freed 2 more gigs but that's nowhere enough. -
GParted Live CD will do the trick.

Ok, thanks everyone for your input. I have the problem solved now.

Acronis Disk Director Suite also works great. I gives you a trial that has all the capabilities enabled. Software programs like this, Partition Magic, Vista Ultimate also comes with a utility that allows you to shrink drives without reformatting as well, etc.
