Bought this new laptop yesterday HP Pavilion dv5-1235dx from Bestbuy, we purchased a recovery disc and in order to make this disc the bextbuy personnel had to configure the network, when we brought it home and tried it on our network we can see all pc's on the network but we cannot access any pc's file on the C drive and we cannot access this laptop's C drive from any of the other pc's on the network and the error message does not give a reason why, I called up HP and they are telling me I have to pay for support for this issue which I will not so anyone here have any ideas please?

I disabled the Vista firewalls on all pc's and uninstalled all anti-virus systems on the laptop.

First, wait about 10 minutes for your dv5 to detect and recognize all the other computers and their configurations in the network.

If that doesn't work, make sure that all the computers (including the dv5) are in the same workgroup. This helps the dv5 find and propagate with the other computers in a faster and more efficient manner.

The last piece of advice I have is to make sure that all the computers have file sharing enabled for the C: drives. Make sure that file sharing is enabled on your new dv5 in the Network and Sharing Center.

BTW, what does the error message say?

Yes, all pcs are in the same workgroup, yes all pc's C drives are shared. yes, I can see the laptop's C drive is shared from my main pc and vice versa. All error message says is "Error code 0x80070005 access is denied".

Follow this link for the solution.
    http://www.pctips.smittystips.com/v_0x80070005_error.php

If I remember correctly you can't share the root directory of a drive, only folders. That was a long time ago, things may have changed.

Please disregard my previous post. You can share the root directory of a drive.

Have you done these three steps.

Right click on the C:\ drive.
    Click on share.

    Click on advanced sharing.

    Check Share This Folder.
    Click on permissions.

    Highlight Everyone.
    Check Allow Full Control
    Click OK.
    Click OK.
    Click Close.

Note: The person trying to access the files in the shared machine does need to have an account on that machine also.

Hope this helps, Good Luck. George

Sorry, that did not work, but I really appreciate your help, I am not going to bother with this and frustrate myself anymore, the "public" docs are working so I'll copy my folders/files to be copied to those folders and then transfer the folders/files from pc to pc, thanks.

That error is certainly a permissions issue. Are you setup with administrator privileges on all the machines. Access to areas other than Public needs administrator permissions.

yes I am, my wife who set up the network will look more closely at the permissions issue on the weekend. Right now I am transferring files via the Public folders, takes twice as long because this way I have to copy my files wherever they are located on the pc into the public folder then transfer to the other pc.
