i've been banging my head against the wall for a few days now trying to find a solution to this problem,

i got a new laptop Compaq Presario V5015US Notebook PC, from a guy on craigslist.

I first noticed a problem when i tried to install windows xp and it stalled during initial setup when it says "setup is starting windows"

I've tried various cd's and other operating systems such as puppy linux and ubunta. They all seem to freeze up when they try to load.

I've ran hard drive and memory tests with various bootable cd rom disks, and tried various partitions and file systems.

I've switched and tested various compatable hardware components such as hard drives, ram, and cdroms.

I've tried various HAL selections while trying to install windows.

I've gutted the machine and booted it up on a piece of cardboard with only bare minimals for hardware.

I'm not 100% sure it's a hardware problem, because I have an older hard drive with windows 98 installed on it, and it loaded up and ran windows 98 perfectly.

    what else could I try?

    boot order is cdrom/hd/floppy/network...
it loads up the install cd just fine, it lags before i'm given the user agreement and options to format..
    "setup is starting windows"

i've tried optical drives from other similar laptops and end up stuck at the same place during install.

    cpu:AMD Turion 64 Mobile Processor ML-32
gpu: ATI Radeon Xpress 200M graphics
I've tested with various sticks of compatable ram both extensivly tested with Memtest86+ V1.70 and pulled out of similar working laptops.

I've tried various install media, and various operating systems. From trying to install winxp, vista, windows 7, ubuntu, puppy linux, and knoppix. I have not tried the HP oem disk which i can order from HP, but i've come across a similar post to mine and they ordered the disks from HP, but had no positive results.

Have you checked the BIOS settings? There may be a setting that prevents the boot sector from being overwritten.

or the install media does not have the proper drivers for your chipset and disk controller.

That is a possibility, but a newer OS install like 7 would have those correct?

the driver library for Win7 was frozen in place almost a year ago. It is seriously out of date. You can get around this by having up to date chipset and disk controller drivers available on a usb key, etc for loading when the OS gives you the option (an advanced setting during OS setup).
