Cant see USB drive

Hi All
Using Presario M2000 XP Home
Just plugged in a Kingston data traveler usb drive which is recognised and in device manager , but I cannot see it in my computer.
Went into Disk mangement and assigned a drive letter ..still cant see it in my computer . Tried formatting it but get a message

" did not complete because partition or volume is not enabled.to enable resart computer"

When I reboot back in disk management the drive letter I have assigned has gone .In device manager I click on the drive properties and it show "location " it always shows as 0 ??
Works perfectly on my desktop running XPPro . Plug in, recognised and shows in my comuter .
I also tried another usb stick same problem.
Any advice ?

 

Very obvious suggestion: did you try more than one USB port? Can you confirm that they are working well, for example by plugging another usb flash drive there?

Sorry for being obvious, but these things need to get out of the way first of all

Yeah I tried the other USB port but its still not in my computer
