I used to work for HP. Her time was up before she moved to acquire Compaq. HP is an extremely large and inefficient company. It's caught right between Dell and IBM.

Dell beats HP because of its ability to drive the cost out of everything. IBM is firmly established and has deep credibility in the high end. Then, if you look to HP's flank, there are companies like EMC, Cisco, Brocade and McData who all do very well in their respective sectors.

The problem with HP is that it doesn't know who it wants to be and it doesn't know what it wants to do particularly well. It's obviously firmly established in the printer business. But, as far as any other IT segment, HP always wears the 'me too' hat. Companies that are investing heavily in their IT infrastructure don't want 'me too'. They want credible players who are experienced, knowledgeable and can support their products. HP isn't that in many IT segments.

Believe me, I managed a $3.2 million HP server and storage solution implementation for a financial services company. 13 months later the client got rid of it and went with Sun and EMC. The client said the solution was unreliable and couldn't get support for it, an absolute no no when it comes to financial services.

HP comes up with new strategies almost every other quarter. The strategies are poor and inadequately thought out at best. The HP iPod by Apple? Come on. HP has enough technical know how and relationships with suppliers to build an MP3 player. If they can design and build an iPaq, they can build an MP3 player.

Look at some of HP's products over recent years. Believe me, the most questionable ones and the ones that failed are a true reflection of the company and many of its employees.

I still don't think HP should have ever purchased Compaq. Compaq is full of morons who don't want to work and don't care about their customers. They are quick to sell you something and leave you hanging when things don't work or go wrong. HP's culture isn't much better. People just don't know what they're doing. Both companies over-promise and under-deliver.

HP could have invested millions strengthening its own PC and server business rather than waste $15 billion buying Compaq. That doesn't include integration costs either. And, if they were really serious, they could have hired an exec away from Dell or IBM to address their PC business.

Finally, is HP a business oriented company or a consumer oriented company? How many companies are positioned to completely serve both businesses and consumers. HP needs to find its identity and get back to business fundamentals. Then again, it's been a long time since they've done that.

Carly's departure was overdue. But, I don't blame her for all of HP's problems. She had to shake the company up and do what she could to get it to move. But, she had to compete with a very deep culture. She would not have lasted this long without buying Compaq. But, buying Compaq probably wasn't the right answer, because it was facing its own problems and has a very deep culture as well.

It's still hard to say if her departure is a good thing. The company could very well be worse off without her. Watch for some of its units to be sold or killed altogether over the next couple of years.

    Sorry for the editorial!

mclassic, wow, I agree with every word you say...but the fact you worked there and dealt directly with them lends even more credence to your well backed and formed opinion.

HP is a jack of all trades master of none. They need to focus on printers and pcs, forget cameras, mp3 players and tvs. Furthermore, split the PC and Printer business.

I feel terrible for the Hewlett and Packard families that built this iconic business, it's a huge mess now from what I can tell.

And from insight into HP on our part here at NotebookReview, there is absolutely no other manufacturer as stubborn or non-responsive as HP in helping us out with review units or even information on their products. They totally snub us. Meanwhile Dell, Sony, IBM and Fujitsu are great to work with.

    HP, you deserve to lose.

I think the final straw for Carly was her agreeing to pour another $3 billion into Intel's Itanium. Like that's going to do anything the previous $billions failed at.

Hopefully they'll find someone competent and tech-savvy to take the helm who's not just in it for the overinflated compensation package. Good grief, it shouldn't take $21 million to fire a lame employee. How many good employees did they have to lay off to pay for that?

FYI, HP's Q1 just ended Jan. 31st. The timing is ironic wouldn't you say? I'll be very interested in hearing if HP's Q1 results played a role in her firing.
