Thanks in advance for the help. I have a strange issue. My notebook only charges when it is either powered off or in hibernation mode. If I am working on it, it depletes the battery- and I only get 45 - 50 minutes on a charged battery. It has been rendered virtually useless. The problem is I need this machine to be fully functional and, for a number of reasons, it really isn't practical to replace it.
Any thoughts on the source of the problem and potential fixes?
Thanks again.

how old is the PC?
did this suddenly become a problem or has it been getting steadily worse?
have you been in contact with HP support at all? -
The machine is 3 years old. It has been getting worse over time. Initially, it would charge most of the time while in use. The next stage was that it would not charge while in use most of the time but once in a while, it would- keep unplugging and plugging back in. Now, it only charges when it is off or in hibernation.
I have not contacted them because I don't want to pay for the pleasure of talking to them. Any advise would be appreciated.

If you're still on the original battery, you're due for a replacement. 45 minutes on a 3 year old Li-ion battery is pretty good.

It actually is a replacement battery that is only 8-9 months old. However, it isn't an OEM battery. It's one of those cheap jobs found on ebay.
I've got to think it is a harware issue. Any other thoughts? I really need to get this machine going soon. I will be needing it in the next month or so to hold me over for a few months.
thanks -
General rule of thumb; you get what you pay for. Cheap batteries don't measure up to OEM's, so it probably will need replacing even though it's not all that old, if you don't look after them properly with regular discharging - they fail all the sooner.
download & run the HP battery checker > Here - to check the status! you need to be running on mains. -
The battery may be part of the problem but I don't think it is the entire problem. The machine should run when plugged in with the battery out. It does not. I'm certainly not a hardware guru but that tells me that other issues abound. Thanks for the link. When I get home, I will run the checker.
Any other suggestions or thoughts will be welcomed.

Did you compare the OEM & new batteries side by side, both for specification and physical differences?
if the specs do not exactly match, you might be asking for trouble (such as yours is displaying) further down the line with charging. The built-in charger might slowly become weaker\damaged, for example; if asked to continually provide more amperage than its design spec! this is not a certainty, though it is a possiblity. I'm just throwing ideas out there.
you should also check battery and enclosure contacts are not corroded\discoloured or slightly bent out of shape and making good contact! a battery case can become warped from the heat & make proper contact hard to achieve.
Have you cleaned the contacts? -
I just had that computer not too long ago. Hp zv5000. I loved it. But I got back to seattle and a taxi ran over it. Good and bad.... I got a new dv6000t but lost my old computer. Anyway, the point is that I had it for 2 years and the battery lasted about 8 minutes. You also never what the person did with the battery on ebay. How they stored it.
