I did a clean install of XP on my new laptop. I downloaded all the drivers I thought I'd need from HP web site.

I have a question mark in device manager for "SM Bus Controller" and "Mass Storage Controller", I can't figure out what drivers they are. Any suggestions?

Also, when I launched the video driver install setup.exe, it says "install engine failed, rpc server is unavailable". The RPC service is fine. I was able to get around it by going into device manager and pointing the .inf file. What would cause that?

I had the same thing occur for the display executable and wireless card executable, pointing the the .inf did the trick.

    That wasn't the correct driver.
That looks like the only issue I have left. I installed XP Pro instead of Media Center and now all the executables are running like they should

    Strange, that worked for me.

You're not supposed to right click on the device in Device Manager and click update, just install the INF and Matrix Storage drivers and it'll remove those.

oh well, atleast you got it fixed some how.

I have a dv8000. I fdisk'ed the drive and whiped the partitions. When I try to install my Windows XP Home it freezes. The point that it freeezes is when it says (Windows Executive) at the bottom of the screen when windows is trying to install. As far as I know the dv8000 has EIDE drive and does not require any special drivers. Is there and issue with the DVD drive and it's drivers? I would have thought that if the drive got far enough to install windows it would finish. (Apparently this thing had 2 74GB drives)
