Hi!
I just got one of these the other day and in order to remove all the bloatware, update to SP1 and more, I went and installed a clean Vista, even backing and restoring the activation (as the thread about using ABR says).
After this, I download every single driver from the HP support page and went through installing them (of couse, the latest version of each and even other bloatware such as help files, wireless assistant, etc.). The thing is that, after everything was installed, I was still having a "yellow unknow device" in the device manager. After much thinking, I guessed that what was missing were the QuickLaunch buttons, because none of the QuickPlay buttons in the keyboard work, neither the "eject" button for the optical drive. But that QuickLaunch wasn't listed in HP drivers. All there was is a Quick Launch Security Update, but not the actual drivers!
After much searching without hope, I tried one last thing: to let windows install those drivers by searching in Windows Update. Amazingly it worked and they were installed as, efectively, the Quick Launch Buttons! But the problem is that those still don't work! The volume mute, slider, treble and bass work (but make no sound when touched, even though they are activated in the Control Panel - Quick Touch), but the QuickPlay, DVD, TV and Eject still don't work!
Also note that before even trying to use Windows Update, I went and installed every single driver (again, not drivers that were outdated to the ones in HP support and I already installed) in the SwSetup folder: still no luck. For what I read in a thread, there should be (?) a QLB folder that would have the Quick Launch Buttons? Well... I didn't had it.
So... I'm short; I'm now clueless as what to do next. Why HP doesn't list every driver in their site. Can someone that already did this point me in the right direction?
And in a related question... for example, when trying to install the Synaptics Touchpad Driver (downloaded from HP - Vista x64), it would say that the operating system was missing something - I don't remember exactly. So I went to the Synaptics website and downloaded another version, which worked just fine, and was even newer that the one listed in HP! Then, the same I noticed when updating the QuickPlay application from itself (the option in its menu): a 3.7 was listed, even though the one in the HP support is 3.6! So, where am I supposed to get every updated drivers? I'm guessing that most of these dispositives have older drivers, because I even tried running scam-software such as DriverAgent, Radar1 (or something), DriverHQ, etc. - and all those detected like 30 outdated drivers, but they forced me to pay to update them.
Well... hoping to hear from you soon, since I want to start using this laptop ASAP!
Thanks in advance guys

Wow...! So that ( ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38001-38500/sp38171.exe) is the missing driver? It isn't listed in the HP support page, right? Why in hell!!!
Do you think that installing that would make the QuickPlay(s) and Eject buttons work? Thanks Alpha! -
Update: I just got home and installed that and... IT WORKS GREAT! Thanks man for pointing that to me; I'd have never found it in that king-kong sized thread! Now every button works, even the ones using the "fn" key!
Now, to address the second part of my thread: anywhere or any guidelines as which of each HP drivers can be downloaded from "somewhere else" (original manufacturer) in order to have them TRULY updated? For example, as with the Synaptics touchpad. What other internal devices can be updated like that? Is there any list compiled or something?
Well... thanks again in advance! -
As for third party or alternate drivers, we've hunted down a few. Mostly for video especially now that Nvidia is making mobile drivers. We've also found a few audio drivers but they don't work for everyone.
Anyway, drop in to the HDX thread and ask away. We like to keep as much in that thread as possible so it's a one stop shop of reference. Don't feel shy about asking a question. We'll answer it a million times if it's been asked already by either answering it directly or pointing to the answer if it's been answered already.
Lots of good folks with lots to share. -
... I'm so sorry I got too happy too soon...
On a second analysis, the TV button in the keyboard doesn't work (but the quickplay and DVD do). The TV button in the remote control DOES work and opens the quickplay software in the TV section, so why doesn't the one in the keboard works? Also, when tapping it, it doesn't make any sound (as with other), as if it didn't even recognized.
Please let me know as that'd be the last step towards a clean vista! -
