I just ordered a HP notebook dv9700t. I found this very interesting forum...............after I placed my order!![]()
Thank you very much for your time regarding this very helpful "clean installation".
If I may say so you did a hell of a job.
I do intend to take advantage of your knowledge and expertise when I receive the notebook.
Before I use your guide I have a question.
When you buy a computer with an Operating System pre-installed by the manufacturer aren't you entitled to get an OEM CD (or DVD) containing exclusively the said OS?
Your answer will be greatly appreciated.![]()

orev said: ↑You're not *entitled* to get anything from anyone. Somewhere in the purchase process is probably some long legal agreement, and buried in there is no doubt something that says something about this. You do get the ability to create the recovery discs, and that's about as much as you're going to get. Companies just don't care, but only because most consumers don't care either.Click to expand...
I heard (not the rumor mill) that legally you should get an OEM CD when you buy a computer and you pay for the use of the installed OS. I "googled" that and I did not find an answer. -

It is a pain though, and I wish they would include the discs. Though only a small % of people would use them, and probably more people would mess up their computer and increase support costs.
That's why the clever people have to be clever to get the disc to begin with! -

The reason why nobody seems to get a CD anymore is probably the same reason nobody gets a manual anymore..its cheaper for them to just give you a pdf and print out the 200 pages using your office printer....they dont give you a disk beause you will burn your own recovery disks which saves them cost...

And just like most people would never read the manual, most people never need the disc either. So it doesn't make sense for the OEM, and it only benefits Microsoft if people use the discs to upgrade. -

I just clean installed 64-bit Vista Home Premium on my dv9000z using this method, replacing 32-bit. Nice!
BTW, it looks like it's possible to integrate the license file into a plain install DVD:
http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=209
You can even get the necessary file for many different notebook vendors:
http://www.oembios.net/
The HP one is exactly the same as the one I extracted from my machine.
Something to play with, one of these days. -
not for nothing, brianstretch, but dont you need to pay to upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit?
-
question about the clean install...
what about the 'useful' OEM software like CD burning software or DVD decoders...does that remain a part of the clean install? -
clean install is pretty straightforward. no other software other than whats included in windows

Like orev said, lateral moves are OK. 64-bit Vista is a bigger support headache so HP would prefer that most people not use it but I want to use all of the 4GB RAM I bought (Crucial, natch) and I do my own tech support anyhow.
The license is in two parts: the file that oembios.net maintains a convenient copy of if you don't have a working existing Vista installation, and information in your BIOS. If your BIOS isn't licensed the constructed discs won't work. I refurbish the occasional PC so being able to construct clean installation DVDs for any given OEM will come in handy. The Windows monopoly tax... err, COA sticker... is not without its advantages. -
brianstretch said: ↑Burn your SWSETUP folder to DVD before you do your clean install so you can reinstall all that stuff later. So far it appears to play nice with 64-bit. I haven't finished reinstalling everything yet.

Thanks for the clarification....my new DV 6700 is Fresh from Shangai and waiting at my place ready for a clean install...
It seems HP has not been shipping the 'anytime upgrade' CD. has this been a problem for anyone? -

So did anyone who after a clean install have problem with their quick launch volume button got it resolved? For me right after clean install the volume buttons do work but no feedback beep and the mute button work but doesn't change color. Also the fn + f7/f8 brightness didn't work. After installing HP quick launch button security update I was able to get the mute button to change color and the function brightness key to work but still no beeps for volume up/down. Now I did check the bios and the beep option is on.
-
For the volume to work, you need to install the realtek audio drivers. As for the beep, I have seen that other's have the problem, but not a fix. Maybe the audio drivers will fix that too.

hypertrophy2 said: ↑yes I forgot to mention I did install the realtek audio driver and everything worked except the beep. I also try installing the quick launch button from the SWSETUP folder and that DID fix the volume beep problem but the function key to change brightness stopped working. Seems like when windows just bootup and before all the apps got loaded in the sys tray you can change the display brightness but after everything is loaded it stopped working. Some how the qlb took control over those function keys and no way to reassign them. I did however run into an error while install the qlb, it stated the hpinfodll.dll could not be selfregister or something along that line...wonder if that has anything to do with screwing up the funciton key to adjust brightness. So now I've decided to settle with just uninstalling the qlb, have the adjust brightness functionality, and live without the volume beepClick to expand...

Orev,
Thanks for your efforts in providing this guide. I just finished a clean install of Vista Home Premium on my dv9000t and feel it was a total success. Since I've had the new laptop since April I had a lot of data to back up, but even that was fairly painless since I have a second hard drive. -
orev said: ↑Yes, they have stopped shipping them for a while now. You need to be resourceful to obtain one, or you can use any other disc you might have access to, like a retail disc or something. This is probably the most painful part of the process.Click to expand...

Hi everyone,
I need help. First, thanks to Orev for this thread. I was able to install Vista, but I think I might have missed some drivers because Flash8 won't install, the LS dvd that came with my DV9207 and an Epson printer are not recognized. Can someone please point me to the thread that shows which drivers are needed along with a description like Sp14433 is the video driver? I know I must have missed something, but I don't know what. Thank you. -
check on the "Epson website for" drivers/software for your model Epson printer
check on the LS SITE For your model driver
not sure about flash.......

Thanks Orev for an excellent description of what to do and how to do it! Everything worked fine except that vista installed on the wrong partition as follows:
Hard drive is 250Gb (232Gib). I would like to partition the drive as follows:
C: Vista & standard programs (Open office, DTPublishing etc)45Gib
D: Games 30GiB
E: Document Files 30Gib
F: Multimedia 127Gib
During installation, the vista disc partitioning utility let me delete the original drives C: and D: and set up 4 new partitions as Disc 0 partitions 1 - 4, (formatted as NTFS) but it did not let me allocate a drive letter or tell it to install on the 45Gib drive. When I pressed the install now command button and let it do its stuff I find it has installed on the 127Gib partition. I have tried this twice with the same result.
How can i get Vista on the first partition? is there some utility which can setup the disc partitions, allocate drive letters and state which is the active partition before installing vista? Would this help?
[I want to partition the drive so that my documents and multi media are separate from the OS. I want the games separate to reduce the size of backup images of the OS & programs.] -
To install Vista on a specific partition, first make the partitions (as you have done), then select the partition you want Vista installed on (make sure the blue selection bar on the partition list is highlighted on the partition you want to use). Then press Next.
My guess is you created the last partition last, then had it selected when you pressed "Next". -
Does anyone know where to get the anytime upgrade dvd other then from microsoft? The links provided on the first page from compusa are no longer valid.
-
I need to ask a couple of questions before I do another Vista install.
1. Does Vista ultimate take up more hard drive space than Vista home and is slower? I don't really need Ultimate if it takes up more space than Home.
2. A question on drivers. On this HP driver site http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2093&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3369389&lang=en#
I see the Intel Mobile chipset family driver and the Geforce video driver. Do I need to install both or just one. My laptop has Geforce video card. I see a Broadcom wireless lan driver and the Intel Pro/wireless driver. Do I need both or just one?
Thank you. -

2. Let Vista install the basic drivers, then just use Windows Update soon after install to download/install any updated drivers/upgrades- it's pretty good at checking your system. Chipset is for drivers for your processor, video for GeoForce card. I bet it came w/ a wireless Broadcom card, as most of them do from HP. -
I read the guide but unfortunately I dont have Windows Anytime Upgrde DVD but I do have the WAUUPRGD folder in my hard drive. I followed the instruction using vlite but the DVD I created using vlite in not bootable it says CDBOOT: BOOTMGR is missing (vlite says it should be bootable). I tried it several times and I already wasted 5 dvd's and got no results...
Contents of my WAUUPGRD folder: sources folder, autorun, and setup

I have seen it on ebay priced from $25 to $60(!)
This disk is like the rosetta stone and equally rare.
I wound up purchasing from micosoft For $7
You'd think microsoft would just issue the disk free in order to facilitate their customers upgrade. Im suprised they just dont build it into the cost of the liscense.
Technically, the disk is free from microsoft, they just charge you $7 for shipping and handling (jeez for $7 you'd think bill gates would follow up with a phone call to make sure I got it)
just wondering if anyone had any other sucess in finding this disk and if they ordered from microsoft how long do you have to wait until you get it and do your clean install?
Anyway Thanks for listening.

Hi guys! I want to do the clean install on my gateway m6816. The thing is that i have only a DVD that says on it ' Gateway Vista Home Premiun 32-bit Operating System Disc', i assume that this is the OEM disc. Am i right?! If it is than i know that i can use it for the install if not can i use it?
And one more thing. When i burn the recovery discs it will actually burn the files that are located on the recovery partition, right?!
Let's i burn the disc using Gateway Recovery Manager that is installed on my laptop. I do the clean install.
Will i be able to recover me system to its original factory instalation using those recovery discs that i have just made even though i dont have Gateway Recovery Manager installed anymore?
