    windows\system32\drivers\iastorv.sys.
i did not install sp1 before i tried this, but i dont know if it would help.
also i removed any accessories to the laptop like usb flash drive.

so if anyone can help me out, it would be greatly appreciated

I believe that file is part of the "Intel Matrix Storage Manager". Did you install that driver? Also, iastorv.sys is the Intel RAID driver. Are you trying to do a RAID setup? You didn't mention what PC you are installing Vista on.

I do not know what that is and i probably never installed that driver. But i don't think thats the problem i am running with amd athlon x2 with geforce 6150. I am using an hp pavilion dv2404ca, i dont think i have a RAID because i only have one hard drive. I am currently running vista home premium 32 bit and trying to install the home premium 64 bit version.

No, all you need is the DVD. Your license will work for both editions as long as you install the same Vista version(32bit Home Premium -> 64bit Home Premium)

Hey can anyone help me here?

Everytime I try to restart Windows after doing this clean install an error message comes up.

Its name reads CL RC Engine3 Dummy Winidow (not Window): QPService.exe - Application Error

The exception unknown software exception (0xc0000005) occured in the application at location 0x22770c9c.

Click on Ok to terminate program

And when I restart Windows I get this error:

    Microsoft Windows

    HID DATA has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

    So any ideas?

Try to burn a new disc. This is probably because the disc did not burn correctly.

If you can boot into Safe Mode, do that and remove the Quickplay software.

copying the files from a dell vista business and removing the OM and pid file/folder does not create a bootable disc. At the moment Im using an open source iso app that allows me to pick and choose which files to convert to an iso and Ill try this. But as it stands copying files, removing the folder and file, then burning a dvd has failed on 2 different discs.

You can't just copy files to a disc and expect it to be bootable. You need to use something that will also make the disc bootable. I suggest using vLite, which will make the bootable ISO for you.

Update the driver for that mouse, or remove it. I think that information tells you where the problem is.

Hey can anyone please tell me specifically what drivers/software I need to install on my dv5t and what they are called while doing the Clean Vista Install? And are there always only one executable file per folder, or do some require you to launch multiple executables that are located in the same folder?

    Really appreciate the help...

    AndrewCK

EDIT: What I mean on the last question is...:

For example in SWSetup/Drivers/chipset there is a setup application, but there also is another setup application in SWSetup/Drivers/chipset/64x . So do I need to run both of these applications?

One more thing: look at each file. There sometime is a 64 and 32 bit file. Install the one that fits your system. Normally if you try the wrong one it will not install.

If vLite isn't working for you then it's not the burning program that's the problem, it's the files. The guide goes over how to convert a Dell DVD into a "standard" one, but they might have changed things around since then. It's hard to say what else you might need to do. It's very specific to each DVD.

    Hello all,

I was wondering if I could use the CD key on the bottom of my HP Pavilion DV6700 CTO to do a fresh install. My system came with Vista Home Premium 64 bit edition. I have been having some software issues which are not the case on my other Vista systems so the only difference is this laptop is running the 64 bit OS. I have a Vista SP1 32-bit install DVD and was hoping to use it to do a clean install. It doesn't bother me to do the activation as I will be using the CD Key on the system which it came. So the clean install without activation instructions that are pinned to the begining of this forum is not of interest to me.

I appreciate any comments you may provide.

    To orev:

thank you very much for writing this guide/thread. it is enormously helpful.

in my effort to prepare for my clean reinstall tomorrow, i read that you had written that in "...some cases, abr tool does not work..." You had written that in context of the 58 cases where those folks' reinstall did not work (poll at top).

i'm wondering if that comment was written PRIOR to you updating your abr tool to "1.0" version? if so, does the current 1.0 version "plug up" that mystery? if the unknown issue continues, may i kindly ask if the incidences of the abr tool not working has decreased since June 2008 when you posted the new abr 1.0 version?

    thank you kindly in advance.

i'm trying to understand as much as possible prior to me sitting down and doing the reinstall tomorrow.

PS: i sent you a comment via your site (i entered the code that is sort of anti-spam like)

You do know you can just call Microsoft to activate if the ABR fails (which it never has on any of my notebooks). The poll on top doesnt exactly reflect on the times ABR has failed to activate.

It takes about 3mins to activate with Microsoft. I wouldnt worry about it.

Doing a clean install is easy.

Ok, I feel kinda stupid for asking this, 'cause I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but I just want to make sure before I end up running into issues.

Will I be able to use an SD card in place of the flash drive for the activation backup? I can't see why it would be a problem, provided I don't have reader/driver issues on the new machine after the clean install.

I am having the same issue on my new dv5z with Vista Home Prem 64Bit installed. Issue popped up after installing a bluetooth mouse. If I delete the mouse and reboot, no problem. When i reconnect the mouse the issue resurfaces. Anyone know how to solve this?

Hi, I just ordered the dv5z today. It will be a bit before I get it, so I might want to ask somethings in the meantime. I'm sorry if some have been asked, but I just couldn't read through all 149 pages. And sorry if some question seems "stupid," but this is also my first laptop, so I don't know exactly what comes with it.

    1. (Sort of obvious, but can't hurt to ask) This guide applies for dv5z too, right?
    2. I got the Microsoft(R) Office Home and Student 2007, so if I do a clean install, would I lose that? I mean if I do, I might as well not do this since I paid for it.
    3. I'm sort of loss reading the beginning with all these discs. Is HP going to send one along? Or will I have to go look for one/buy one?
3.5. As an extension to 3., what is OEM?
    4. HP should have an instruction manual to make the recovery discs, right? I read the FAQ at the end of the guide, but the answer was sort of unclear for me. As in if by some unlucky chance I mess up burning it, how can I reburn it? Just delete the files that the FAQ says to search? Or is there a different step to do it?
    5. Is there a compiled list of what drivers to reinstall after the clean install? I would hate to miss one or accidentally put something that I will not need back on.

Again, I'm sorry if these have been asked. I read the opening post and skimmed the next few pages, but I simply couldn't read through all of this hoping that my questions would be answered by someone else already. Thank you.

    Probably.

    OEM

For the Office software, as long as you have the CD or other media that it came with, then you can reinstall it. If not, you will need to obtain the media again.

HP probably won't send you any discs. You'll need to burn your own Recovery Discs using the software they include, and they don't ship Anytime Upgrade discs anymore. There is a pamphlet in the box telling you how to start the software to make the recovery discs.

    1. This guid should apply to the z
    2. I don't know. HP should send you a disk with the program on it to reinstall. It might be on your hard drive in the SWSETUP file. If so, you should be able to reinstall it.
    3. You will have to find a vista disk to reinstall. Find someone with a Dell computer and vista disk is the best.
    5. See the posting at the top of page 148. These were all the drivers and software on my computer.

How you backup your data is up to you, but I recommend just a straight copy of the files to wherever you're going to put them. "Backup" programs are usually more trouble than they are worth, and you might wind up with files that have your data locked inside and no way to get to it.

I was getting the same thing after a clean install. I had the Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 5000 hooked up when it started happening. It is one of those keyboard/mice combos where you hook up a receiver via USB.

    Also, I have Vista x64.

Well, after installing Vista SP1, it seems, for now, to have faded. I will keep you posted. Do you have SP1 installed?

The HP_RECOVERY partition is not a good choice since if your HD becomes defective all your data is lost. A single sided DVD can hold approximately 4.7 GB of data. That is a lot of word files, documents, spreadsheets, mp3's, jpg (pictures), etc. I backup to multiple external Harddrives as well as DVD's for archival stuff.

How important your data is to you (or loss thereof) and quantity should pretty much define your backup media choice and frequency of backup. If you are backing up more than 20GB of data on a regular basis I would recommend a USB external Harddrive at a minimum.

how do you copy the SWsetup folder to a DVD. Do u just copy paste or do u actually need some program to do this??

Also does ISORecorder allow you to make a vista installtion disk out of an ISO?

the SWsetup folder is just the freebie software that came with the preinstallation, so you could use either the built-in dvd recording in vista or the program of your choice. isorecorder can make the installation disk, you could also try vlite which works well and allows you to remove any features from the installation you don't need or want.

i think it has something to do with bluetooth if you have it and use a bluetooth mouse

if thats the case, then reinstall your bluetooth driver or find a more updated one

Yup - HID stands for Human Input Device, so likely mouse

Yes it is because of the bluetooth mouse. I have the Microsoft 5000 bluetooth mouse. However I have tried to reinstall it and it does not solve the problem. Also I can not find a new driver for this mouse?

Thanks for the great guide, everything went well for my new dv5t, however, i went from 64 bit vista to 32 bit because the DVD was apparently meant for 32 bit. Is there a way to bypass this besides getting a 64 bit DVD? I have HP recovery DVDs but there was only a Dell guide.

Sorry if this was brought up before, but 150 pages is way too much to look through.

Unfortunately, the only way around this is to get a 64bit DVD and install from that.

If you can get your hands on a MSDN developer, you can get a DVD from them. I managed to get a MSDN Systems Developer license from my work, which gave me access to all of the microsoft software. I was able to pull down Vista Ultimate 64bit last night.

I just received a dv7t with Home Premium 64-bit & SP1. Unfortunately, the clean install guide mentions the restricted availability of integrated SP1 Vista discs. I don't have the luxury of grabbing an MSDN license - do I have any other options, or is a clean install impractical for 64-bit with SP1?
