I'm pretty sure that the Anytime disc would only be 32.

didn't see anyone respond to this last one. The oem key showing in your Welcome Windowpic is the sony oem key for vista home premium. I'm not sure why the abr tool shows to be removing all those keys, but I'm sure Orev can explain it. The sony certificate is the same for all sony's. If it stored the correct sony oem key for you--6JWV3-xxxxx-4GV68-xxxxx-G6MF9, it should work properly.

If you need to verify an oem key or certificate, feel free to give me a shout.

You can also google for "Vista oem auto cert installer" or vista oem keys

I have an HP Vista Business reinstall CD, which seems to have all the files for every version on the CD, but when I try to install, it only give the option of :

Windows Vista Business, or HP Windows Vista Business.

It doesn't have an $OEM$ folder or pid.txt file as the dell CDs do, so I can't see how to change this HP OEM CD, so that I have the option of choosing Home Premium instead.

SOME file, somewhere on that CD must be telling it to only display those 2 options, and then pointing to the apprpriate install, based on the selection. It must be possible to make HOME/PREMIUM etc appear too, and then re-create the CD using vlite.

    Any ideas?

I narrowed it down to the Sources\Install.wim file. None of the other files on the CD affect the list of operating systems shown at the start of the install, but this one does.

Now I'm using ImageX to go through the wim file, to see if I can figure out which file is telling the install which versions of Vista are available.

Any help would be appreciated... someone must know how HP puts together their OEM install CDs.. or how you modify a vista install.wim to only display a set list of operating systems...

Thanks for the guide. However, I do have a question that I couldn't find an answer to by searching this thread. After doing a clean install on my dv5t, I then downloaded all the drivers from the HP web site. Was I supposed to "Run as administrator" for any of the driver installations? I'm new to vista and after installing some of the drivers I got a message that said something to the effect of didn't install correctly, which I would click the button that said something like it did install correctly. (Sorry I don't remember the exact message).

Anyhow, when I check the device manager there are no signs of missing drivers. My only issue that I notice is hitting the QuickPlay button doesn't launch windows media center like it used to do. The other quick launch buttons work.

So does the annoying UAC screw with installing drivers, should I have ran anything as an administrator?

    Thank you.

I don't "Run as Administrator" when installing my drivers, so I don't think it matters. I've never had a problem with them. Perhaps you downloaded a wrong driver here or there?

I just obtained a Dell Vista recovery disc.
Will this disc work in my attempt to do a clean Vista install on my HP DV5T lap top?

ABR removes all the keys to make sure that there are no other conflicting keys installed, then it installs the backed-up one.

As long as the device manager shows the devices and they are working correctly, you should be OK. Vista tries to be smart and ask you if something didn't install correctly, but it doesn't really know. As long as you have no problems, you should be fine.

Check the section in the guide that talks about using a Dell OEM install disc to make a clean install disk that should work on other systems.

I finally got around to reinstalling vista, but I have some driver issues. I installed a pre-SP1 vista version and downloaded and installed all the drivers from hp.com but can't seem to fix this.

When I go to Device Manager, it has an exclamation mark by three "Base System Device" under the "Other Devices" category.

For the first "Base System Device" the properties says its "PCI bus 6, device 0, function 1"

Second one says "PCI bus 6, device 0, function 3"

Third "PCI bus 6, device 0, function 4"

All three says "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."

When I click "Reinstall Driver" for each of them, they all have an error message saying "Windows could not find driver software for your device. If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and check the support section for driver software"

Can I just uninstall these drivers or will I run into some major issue? I think this is preventing me from upgrading to SP1 using Windows Update (If I just download the huge standalone file and try installing that way instead, will I run into issues?)

That message means that the system has found some devices that you have not yet installed the drivers for. Try to go through every device you have and remember if you installed the driver. Think of things like the fingerprint scanner, sound card, chipset, video card, etc...

I don't think that should prevent you from installing SP1, but other out of date drivers might. The touchpad is one that I think was a big problem that needed to be updated, however the versions you download from HP should be fixed by now.

I think the "...three "Base System Device" under the "Other Devices"..." are the Quick Launch Buttons or maybe the Ricoh card reader. Sorry, I can't remember exactly.

I just took delivery of a new HP HDX 18 today, and I immediately went through the "clean install" procedure. The only modification I made was that I installed the Vista SP1 before I restored the activation key.

Everything went perfectly. I blew away the restore partition and installed on a new empty partition. After Vista install and updates, I stepped through the driver installs until the Device Manager was "clean", and then installed a real copy of NIS 2009, Norton Ghost 14, and Office 2007. I ghosted the clean install before I installed Office, in case it would not activate, but it did.

So now I've got a lean clean Vista Ultimate x64 install with all of the latest updates and I'm going to once again Ghost it and store it away in case there's ever a problem.

Thanks again for the great thread and all of the excellent support provided by this forum! :D

Oh, that could explain it. I didn't install the quick launch or quick touch associated stuff.

My laptop starts and shuts down so fast w/o all that bloatware and I even got a $30 discount smoothly when I called HP last week to price match when they offered an additional $30 instant discount during some 3 day period. :D (Unlike the c**p service from Dell that I'm still dealing with)

    Hi,

I am just wondering, I currently have Vista SP1 32bit installed on my laptop. Just about to get 4gb ram so was wondering if it is possible to use the ABR on my current install. Then install Vista SP1 64bit and then restore activation with the ABR? Wasn't sure if I would encounter any problems or not.

    Thanks

I might be wrong, but I think once you have activated, in your case the 32 bit version the key is locked to that one. You could do a clean install of the 32 bit but of course you would miss out on using all of your ram. I believe a key will work for either version of windows the first time, but once you have activated under either one, you can't switch it up. Can anybody else clarify for him?

After a perfect "clean install" on my new HDX18, I followed the same procedure on my dv9000, which I am handing over to my wife. Again, no problems at all, in fact, the driver reinstalls were minimal on the dv9000.

So again, great info. Thanks a lot!

A Vista key is good for both 32-bit and 64-bit, just not at the same time. If you installed 32-bit with it, you can uninstall 32-bit and install 64-bit with the same key.

Hi, I have completed my clean install of Vista on my HP DV5T.

It was completely successful except for one item in the device manager listed under "Other Devices" called PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller

The hardware ID is vendor:8086 device:2932
From what I have found it is supposedly an Intel device and is an "extended thermal module" or more specifically
    " Intel Corporation|82801I (ICH9 Family) Thermal Subsystem"

Does anybody know exactly what this is and where I can find drivers for it? Thanks in advance!

Seriously, where can I get a Anytime Upgrade disc or equivalent? I want both a 32bit disc and a 64 bit disc. I have vista utlimate right now. Anyways, since I have a HP, I don't have WAU folder, etc.. Can anyone zip up the files that were downloaded from MS' website and upload to rapidshare or something?

AlphaHex, thanks for the info. However, I have already installed the Intel Chipset Driver 9.1.0.1012 from laptopvideo2go (Its WHQL certified and everything). Isn't that just an updated version of the link you provided? Or am I still supposed to install the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility?

I am just worried that something will get messed up if I try to install the older 9.0.0.1008 version over the one I just installed. I'm also curious, if this utility is what is supposed to address this item, shouldn't the updated version I installed have addressed it upon installation? Or are they different?

    Thanks again!

Ok, I didn't know that you've done it already. 1012 is the latest WHQL and you should keep it. I've done a quick analysis of 9.1.0.1012 package and there is a line in ich9core.inf file saying:

    %PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2932.DeviceDesc% = NO_DRV, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2932.

NO_DRV mean that the driver is not required.

If you know someone who bought a Vista Upgrade from a retail store or warehouse, you can ask to borrow their CDs. You don't need their code or anything. These discs, no matter what the version of Vista, are also "Anytime Upgrade Discs". The Ultimate Upgrade pack has both 32 and 64 bit discs in it. I'm not sure about the other versions.

Other than that, I can't help with where to find these.

Yea, unfortunately Microsoft has pulled every way of obtaining a Vista disk except for purchasing a new copy. The only legal way that remains is to either use a friends disk to do the install while using your own key, or to find an Windows Anytime Upgrade Disk. The latter can be found on Ebay and some other places, although they're going quickly too.

It says "Windows was unable to install your PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller" and "Windows could not find driver software for your device"

This is even after it searches online for it.

When trying to update the driver software in Device Manager use the "Browse for driver sofware on your computer" method and tell it to search for the driver software in this location: C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 with "Include subfolders" checked.

I don't know if this will work but it did for me when I had a similar problem. Vista can appear pretty dumb sometimes when searching for drivers.
