Well, I have been reading all the orev's post about clean vista installation, but my big question is... if the overall performance of a clean vista is so much better than the HP vista.

    Faster cold boot up?
    Faster shutdown?
    Faster opening utils?
    Fewer Hangs?
    Faster transfer over network?

I do the entire question because I don’t want to pass through the all process just to find the clean vista is pretty much the same that HP vista in terms of performance.

    Thanks!

I noticed Start up/ shutdown a lot faster and mainly SO MUCH MORE STABLE STABLE STABLE. Not sure about network though IE seems to hang much less.

The one on the sticker will have to be activated via phone, as that is not the one HP used to activate the laptop originally.

This I believe is a Vista issue, and probably one of the worst things about Vista in my view. Some believe its some kind of DRM checking that is slowing the network transfers.. but yes, they are slow and I don't think MS has done anything about this yet. Hopefully the SP they release early next year will address this issue. They better, since most companies are staying away from vista because its networking code is the worst part of vista. This is a real step backwards from XP as far as the slower then hell transfers over networks. But vista is so bad that MS finally caved in and extended the time oems can sell XP until summer 08. They also are providing XP downgrade discs to anyone who has vista business or utlimate. This, in my opinion, is a complete, and total admission from MS that vista is not working out the way they planned for their business customers and those who payed out the yin yang for ultimate.

Personally, I have given up on my want to do complete shutdowns. As you probably have noticed MS put the big to sleep key in the place where you used to shut the system down. Sleep mode is much faster in boot times and it does not take too much power. Vista is a beast. Lets just hope that the SP leans this monster out. But I am not expecting much. But its tolerable if you tweak the system and cut down on startups and services. But the network transfers.. damn there is nothing anyone has done to fix that.. Basically, MS broke the code in that department.. its pathetic for sure and a complete reversal in the wrong direction.

After I did a clean install of Vista on my laptop I could notice the difference. The only little hassle was that I had to call microsoft to activate. There is a fix for this though and if you read the post about doing a clean install it tells you how to bypass this. It has to do with copying the activation folder and adding it to the Vista Installation disk. Look around and you'll find it.

I don't know if the clean install only applies to HP laptops but, I have already done three clean installs in the past week since I did mine. All have benefited from this. I gained 20gb from doing this. This should be a standard practice for any new Hp laptop owner.

Definitely a faster boot for me and along with the other Vista and Geforce tweaks everything is quicker.

Clean installs apply to every computer sold to a home user. Business end laptops have little to no bloatware, because they know if they sell slow computers to businesses they wouldn't be buying from them. Every computer sold by a mass distributor such as dell, hp, toshiba, etc will have a lot of bloatware on models sold to the home users. You will not only gain performance by doing a clean install but save extra space on the HDD as well. Just make sure to always burn your recovery disks before you do a clean install so you have something to fall back on in case something happens.

OK, finally i have a clean install. Vista is more responsive and faster. I installed quick launch buttons and quickplay.

But....(there is always one).... the quickplay and dvd buttons did not work neither from the keyboard nor from the remote control.

Anyone knows if there is a driver for the remote control buttons in the swsetup folder?

Does your MUTE button turn amber when you tap on the mute? When I clean installed Vista, my mute didn't turn amber when I tap it but it does gets muted, and the speaker on the taskbar does show it's muted. I find this strange, so I reverted back to the pre-installed Vista, and the mute is working and turning amber when I tap on it. Strange.

Installing Quickplay can be a very tedious and tempermental process. Search the forums for this and you should find it. I remember reading information about it here. Sorry I can't be more help, but I returned my laptop before I went in-depth on installing Quickplay.

I installed all the HP drivers and HD audio and everything, including the Quickplay drivers and Quickplay for Windows. When you say HP 4.8, what do you really mean there?

I did a clean install of ultimate and I'm loving it, so much faster than when I got it. However, I'm having one problem. Whenever I'm done using it I always close the lid to put in into sleep mode, occasionally when I lift the lid the screen stays black and I'm forced to manually restart the computer. Anyone else experience this?

Just done, updating quick launch buttons to version 6.10 c1 did the trick

Toaster: Hp audio driver ver. 4.8 or above. The vista native driver dont change the blue light to amber when muted.

I guess I am one of the odd one here. I have a 6433cl model (from Costco) which I have not yet clean-installed, and a 6500 CTO that I did clean install. Surprisingly, the unclean one starts faster that than the clean one! There is basically a 30-second dos prompt flashing thing before the globe shines, which delays the whole thing.

I did do the Vista tweaks suggestions from another thread (disabled TMM, unselected services I did not need, as well as used TuneXP to see if that makes a difference. But I still have that delay and it takes more time than the unclean does. Any suggestions?!

The main purpose of a clean install is to get rid of norton, because that's impossible to get rid of otherwise. The next reason is to have a clean system so *you* can control and know exactly what is on the system. You may also see faster boot times, etc... but that is not the main goal.

orev - agreed! Though intuition says if I am removing junk, I should be able to boot faster - unless HP customizes some settings to make it boot faster?!

Btw, thanks a TONNE for that clean install thread. The install went real smooth. Just had a little fun with a couple drivers, but easily resolved.

HP actually does do some customizations, but they are also downloadable from HP which they call "essential updates for vista". They tune the power settings and things, but they don't really do anything to speed up the boot time.

    Hey Orev,

Thanks for the post on how to do this! I just got done doing a clean install from your instructions and everything went smooth as glass! If anyone had a problem doing this is because they did not do something right in the process. When I got my laptop 2 weeks ago, I noticed that my Quick Play buttons never worked and I never got the beep sound when I hit the volume up or down. After reinstalling the drivers after the clean install, everything worked properly. It is nice to know that bloatware is not on my laptop anymore.

For the people that ask if there is any performance change.........You can bet your bottom dollar! Before the clean install, I was over 1GB of memory usage at idle with my programs loaded on, now I am at 710MB at idle. Before I loaded my programs, I was at 500MB and that was checking it after the clean install of Vista. When I got my laptop, it was idling at 660MB from HP before I did anything to it! Then it eventually crept up to 1.2GB of memory usage after a week. Talk about being ticked off! Bloatware makes me sick!! Anyway, Vista is very responsive now than it was before so I am completely happy with the outcome. Oh yeah, boot time was like 2.5 minutes before the clean install, now it is at 57 seconds!

    Again Thanks Orev!!

Hey thanks... That explains a lot. Like why it takes hours to transfer files, from one computer to the next... grrr... I do believe they are addressing it in the SP. I read on wikipedia that they are addressing file copying, which I assume will help with this issue...
