Clean install W8 on a hybrid-drive with mSSD and HDD?

Please excuse me since HP’s convoluted ENVY naming convention has become the dumbest thing on earth.
I’ve been searching for 5 hours and can’t find a single thing on what I want to do. Probably because of the reason above.
My hp laptop is the ENVY 14t (1115-dx) Ultra-TOUCH-book purchased from bestbuy.

I want to do a clean install w/ Windows 8 Pro but not sure how to approach it with new 32GB mSSD Hard Drive Acceleration Cache.
Clean install is not new to me. I’ve done it millions of times. But this integrated mSSD thing confuses me. My concerns and questions:
1) When I wipe/format the partition(s), will I see the 32GB mSSD and 500GB HDD?
2) If so, where do I install the OS?
3) How do I get the mSSD to talk to the HDD?

Currently, I don’t see the mSSD in “My Computer” but I know the mSSD is communicating somehow with the HDD. I just don’t want to start the process and end up with a mSSD that is not functioning correctly.
BTW, will I have to download all the drivers again? Or can I just save the “SWSetup” folder? Anything else?


If you point me to where I can read more about clean install on hydrid-drive computers like mines, I’d appreciate it.

*I come from the alienware community. My M17x I have a intel SSD with an HDD, I see both drives and can control both drives. Not seeing this on my HP confuses the hell out of me.

 

I've been wondering the same thing and I'd like to point out that I don't think that is an Envy 14.

I have gotten a similar Ultrabook over the holidays and it is the Envy 4 (four not fourteen). Although it does have a 14" screen. This is also reflected on the Bestbuy page where it says " Model 4-1115dx". I have the Envy 4-1195ca from Costco (specs appear to be the same).

Yeah the model naming mashup is frustrating and there doesn't seem to be a thread for these particular devices.



In device manager and in the Intel Rapid Storage Technology application it shows two different storage devices. One is the 500GB drive and the other is the 32GB mSata SSD. In the Intel application it shows the SSD as being partitioned into a 8GB data volume and 22GB cache volume. Both with Type: Raid 0.

In Windows Disk Management the 8GB data partition is visible but it cannot be mapped to a drive letter.

In task manager there is an IAStorDataSvc process that is always using 1-2% CPU. So it seem that there might be some service which handles the SSD as a cache drive. It looks to me like they might show up as separate drives with a new install but the stock configuration is some sort of SSD cache setup. I've not checked for myself yet as I don't want to ruin the drive setup either... heh.

 

just did this...

install win 8 like normal on the hdd (in raid mode if you have the option) install the intel rapid storage software after win 8 is done. turn on acceleration from intels software.

note: if your installing a different version of windows from the factory install its a pain in the .... install the oem version then upgrade, will save you hours

 

forgot.. unless your using intels rapid start software then theres no need to partion the ssd to 8/22 gb
