Love the laptop, but every now and again I hear a not-so-loud - but noticeable ticking/clicking sound, maybe from the hard drive, 500 G Hitachi.

The system AND hard drive seem to working perfectly, but ANY clicking sound coming from ANY hard drive worries me. I am running Windows 7 64 bit

    Any help is appreciated.

Google the harddrive's model number and see if there's a firmware update that fixes that. You can find the model number by going into the device manager.

Sometimes that happens with hard drives even if they are working perfectly. If there is a firmware update then do it but if not I personally would not worry about it.

Ok, it's a Hitachi Hts725050A9A364, where might I look to see if there is a firmware update, and if so, how do you install a FIRMWARE update, not the driver, I assume.

    Thanks

I'm with abaddon4180, the clicking is, I believe, the head parking. I forgot the use of this, because my hard drive used to do this quite often, going to Windows 7, I noticed it does it a lot less than it did on Vista, not sure if that had anything to do with it, but the hard drives are usually fine if you hear this for the most part. I think some Macbooks were expieriencing this a couple generations back.

Hi bbildman, I had that on my old G7000 series, within 2 weeks the hard drive failed, luckily still under warrantee, got laptop changed. If I were you, I would backup all the important files you have now before it fails.
Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear, but this is the worst case scenario.
    Good luck.

Hello, I have the same Hitachi Hts725050A9A364 as bbildman, with exactly the same clicking-ticking sound, and do not know how to solve this. Any ideas ?
    Thank you !
