I need a easily portable, and "college budget" notebook. I read the thread on Asus machines which are awesome, but a little bit out of my price range. Since I’ve always had HP and im satisfied with their performance i decided to look at some of their notebooks. I wanted to know how people felt about the HP Pavilion zv5000 and the HP Compaq Tablet PC TC1000.
Which would be the better notebook for a college student? Also if you have any other suggestions on good notebooks, they would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Well, the tc1000 is a very old tablet, I wouldn't even think about touching that one. They have more current models if you really want tablet pc functionality. If you're on a tight budget though, the dv1000 is a good choice. It can be spec'd out well for $1000 or so. Most likely no shipping or tax if you get it on hpshopping.

I currently have the the zv5000 and I love it. I go to school as well, and it works well in class. However, it is a little heavy (7.2lbs). Since most of my books are heavy, the weight does not bother me much. I have had no problems with the computer. I love the screen and graphics, does not run hot, you can barely here the fans. Battery life is okay, I have never run down the battery, so I honestly could not tell you what the battery life is, but all in all in it a great laptop. Perfect for a college student.

The zv5000 series has been discontinued in favor of the zv6000 series (very minor upgrade). I recommend looking at the L2000 that was just reviewed. Much more portable and still relatively inexpensive. The Compaq V2000z (same guts) is worth a look too if you prefer silver to black. A zv5000z or zv6000 with a 12 cell battery will work well too, and the 15.4" screen is NICE, but I'd lean towards the L2000 for lugging around campus.

If you want the large screen but don't want to sacrifice battery life, also take a look at the HP ze2000z which has a Turion processor and 15" screen.
