I am helping my cousin buy a laptop and this are the two best option that I can find for her budget. I am an HP guy and I have had good experience with the HP machines, and not so much with the Compaq since my sister had a compaq V5000 AMD and it suddenly die after 1 year last October.

In the other hand I don't have experience with the Toshibas at all so I wanted to see what you guys think. I personally like to chose HP/Compaq computers but both have good specs and the price difference is not that big, the only thing that concerns me is the build quality which I know at this price point is can be questionable.

Here are the specs which are very similar, with a $50 difference.

    Compaq - Presario F756NR Price:$549.99

    Windows Vista Home Premium

    AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 TL-58 1.9GHz

    2GB DDR2 RAM
    160GB HD 5400rpm
    Double-layer DVD±RW/CD-RW
    Wireless LAN (802.11b/g)

    Toshiba A215 Sale: $499.99

Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1

    AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 TL-60 2.0GHz

The Toshiba is cheaper and has slightly better specs. The difference between the Compaq and Toshiba at this price range is going to small. But from what I have seen of the A215, it felt more plasticky and thicker compared to the Compaq.

BTW, Compaq and HP have up until now the same build quality since they were essentially the same underneath. Now, however HP it seems like they are positioning the Presario's as the cheaper alternative.

That is good to know because I did not know if hp was still using the same parts on both lines. It seems that HP is either eliminating the AMD models or they are just selling them at the stores.

Well I will tell her to buy the Compaq, because last night I read some bad user reviews of the Toshiba A15 on Cnet.com

BTW how good is the ATI RADEON X1200 compared to NVIDIA GeForce 7000M?
