Hey everyone I am looking at ordering a Compaq V3000z. These are the specs off the one I am going to order:

    – Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic
    – AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-56(1.8GHz/1MB)
    – 14.1" WXGA Widescreen (1280x800)
    – NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 6150
    – Imprint Finish + Microphone + QuickPlay
    – 2048MB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    – 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    – FREE Upgrade: 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support
    – 802.11a/b/g WLAN
    – No TV Tuner w/remote control
    – One 6 Cell and One 12 Cell Lithium Ion Batteries
    – Microsoft(R) Works 8.0
    – HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

My most important question is the Windows Vista that I have selected in 64 bit? Some other sites would say 32 bit in parenthesis but this says neither. My second question is getting the 14.1 brightview widescreen worth the extra money? And my final question would be should I just get 1 stick of 512 ram and then buy the 2 sticks of 1 gig each? And if its not much cheaper to go aftermarket, is it better to keep the stock ram?

    Thanks so much in advance

AFAIK HP only offers 32-bit Vista on their consumer notebook lines.

You should buy your 2GB RAM from HP. The cost difference isn't material and you're guaranteed compatibility.

    Get the Bluetooth option too.

Brightview vs. matte is a personal preference.

If you want the 64bit version, I'd say get the lowest available version from HP...then turn around and buy an OEM disc from NewEgg for cheap. You get a clean install so that's a plus.

Thanks. Basically is it worth it order a 64 bit version of Vista?

Depends. If you have a 64-bit app in mind, or you're planning on keeping the notebook for a few years and don't ever want to reinstall the OS, then maybe. Otherwise it's tough to justify the additional expense.

Microsoft should have forced the issue by making Vista 64-bit only, but Intel held on to 32-bit-only CPUs waaaaay too long for that to be politically acceptable.

They already got lot pointed to their way much high platform requirement for running this new monster, why Gates want get more attention for throwing off 32-bit? That will throw lot of users to Linux, which is one way I like to see. :p

No, Bill is not that stupid in sense of business.
