Back in Christmas I got an HP Compaq 6715b. Within the first week of having it it showed problems, but I guess I figured it'd work itself out or it wouldn't be a big deal. I don't think I can put up with it anymore though.
The first problem is that the computer kind of shuts itself off. The screen will go black, everything stops, and the only way to fix it is by a hard reset. Something to note: while in this 'black' state the green power light, as well as the Wi-Fi light, remain on although the computer shows no signs of function.
The second problem is a power malfunction. The battery holds about a 20 minute charge, if at 100%. The battery also doesn't recognize that the AC Adapter is in, and I literally have to jam the adapter into the power jack - and then hold it in while still pressing in - to get the computer to charge. Even if I do this sometimes it won't charge, and sometimes it charges for 5 seconds and stops.
The laptop is still under warranty, and I figure the power problem is the computer's problem (my sister has the same model laptop and mine won't receive charge from her jack either).
So, any suggestions? Or should I just get a new one? Thanks for anything.

if it's still under warranty, you'd better return it. The jack problem is most probably a hardware issue on the motherboard. As for the black outs, have you reinstalled the operating system since Christmas?

    TheBoard,

    1) Screen issue is most likely a video issue in reference to the motherboard. HP has been coming across a lot of notebooks lately from varying model series that demonstrate what you are stating, and it was found that the solder used to seal capacitors and/or graphics chips would give out or melt at higher temperatures the notebook experienced during heavy usage.
    2) Battery charge could be fixed by recalibrating the battery. I believe that HP provides a program to do this, but I am not sure what or where to find it.
    3) The power adapter problem is simply a connector problem that sounds like it is rooted in a bad or going bad connector in the notebook on the motherboard.

Either way, it is best to send it off to repair, if for nothing else but to have something that you could resell for some money towards a new notebook if you chose to go that route.

Right, to fix the screen issue.

Right click on your desktop and go on ATI contol panel, then look near the top left where it says hotkeys then disable the ATI hotkey thingy, press Ok then restart your computer should fix it :D

Its a bug in the HP/ATI drivers on this model (had it on both the ones i have owned.)

I have no idea about your power issues, my last 6715b lasted 11 months with According to S.M.A.R.T 4817 hours uptime, and it could still hold a good 3 hours battery.

Are you running vista or XP, you should check if your laptop is on the "Always on" profile or the "high performance" profile.

The laptop not recodning the power adapter, ive heared this a few times as well as the laptop asking you to remove the dvd drive, but ive only ever heared these problems on toshiba laptops *wouldent touch them with a bargepole*

    Maybe a RE-installation is due?

Hope this helps, once you fix the few little bugs on this laptop is really, quite good :)
