I purchased a C717nr for my son. The first thing we did was create the 2 restore dvds and put them up. He tried Vista out and wanted to go back to XP. So I cleared the "C" drive and installed XP Pro ("D" partition still intact). He has used XP for 6 months now wants to go back to Vista. I inserted the 1st disc, hit F11, and it give me an error The disc are not valid for the computer. So I try to back up off the partition and it does the same thing. I have a version of Vista from a torrent and installed it. It will work but I don't like using it.

Any ideas on what went wrong with the backups?

Is there a way I can bypass the error and continue installing it?

    Thanks,

You should not have changed your Operating system from Vista to XP. You will have to call HP and order a set of recovery cds with which your can revert your laptop back to Vista. And you will have to pay $20 for the recovery cds even if you are in warranty because you have changed the factory settings of the laptop and have void your warranty. Your warranty will become valid once you run the recovery cds ordered from HP and revert your laptop back to its factory settings.
