Has anyone seen any reviews of the Compaq Presario CQ50? I found a place that has it for a good price, but I need to know if it has any heating issues first.

We've had one at my work, and it's on all day long, and I haven't seen it get warmer than any average notebook.

Seems like an overall well built budget system.

I'd spend a little more for the dv5z to get its AMD/ATI chipset instead of the CQ50's NVIDIA. The CQ50 is probably OK, but even if NVIDIA has straightened out their chip meltdown issues the AMD chipset is still better.

I have one on order that has a ship date of today, but I can't say much about it yet as I don't have it. It looked like an attractive budget notebook that is thankfully devoid of all those pressure-sensitive media "buttons" that line the Pavilion models. As for heat, there was a recent post on here from an owner who says it gets rather warm, but that is little surprise to me (as most AMD 65nm dual-cores (31w +) seem to be warmer than Intel's newer 45nm 25-watt Penryns).

Maybe we should have an unofficial owners lounge for the CQ50Z, so any thoughts or reviews are in one place?

If you're still looking for a firmer answer by Saturday, I'll check it out once I'm back at work, and post back here to give you some more definitive answers.

I'd appreciate if you could do that for me, JM.

Well crud, it seems I had forgotten my obligation here!

Anyway, I checked out the unit closer at my work, it was running fairly average, compared to other notebooks. The system had been on at least 6 hours, and even the underside of the unit was easy to touch, and not anywhere near uncomfortable.

The topside of the unit had a few "warm" spots, but they were acceptable and weren't bad to work over.

Overall, I say the cooling for the unit is well built. Not as high class as some of the ThinkPad systems, of course, but better than many of the units out there, that are known for their heating issues.

    :)
