After putting a new solid state, upgrade from 4GB to 8GB ram, fresh install of Windows 7 with all the updates, and another 20 programs I decided like a fool to run HP Support and again like a fool had the settings set to automatically download and update.. Well I wasn't watching close and the laptop was running a BIOS update before I could stop it. Wouldn't ya know halfway through that update.......FREEZE! Laptop was running perfect.. I even had it down to 0 defrags after installing 43GB of OS, software, and updates! So I left it sitting frozen for hours and hours hoping just maybe it would come to and finish. But nope I'm not that lucky so the next day I had to pull out the battery to get it to shut down and then I started the Google process. After reading a half dozen posts from people stating they tore theirs apart and pulled the CMOS. This supposedly worked for them so I did that. Tore it apart, pulled the CMOS, cleaned, lapped, and reseated the heatsink. Figured might as well since it was tore all the way down. Put it back together and still have the black screen of death. Then I went on for hours and hours trying to make the perfect USB flash drive but couldn't figure what exactly the BIOS FD files needed to named because the platform file in the BIOS didn't give any info. So hear I am asking, begging for someone who can go to this link HP Notebook System BIOS Update (AMD Processors) - Compaq Presario CQ57-229WM Notebook PC | HP® Support and tell me exactly how to format the flash drive and what the key combination is when you do this emergency BIOS flash.... Thank you in advance....

It's a tricky one but try the following:
Create a usb flash with the following file names:
03577.bin
03579.bin
3577.bin
3579.bin
03577.fd
03579.fd
3577.fd
3579.fd
Don't forget to format as FAT (not fat32) and use one no bigger than 128mb!
Boot the laptop to the recovery using FN+ESC or Winkey+B - don't know which one is correct on this model i'm afraid.
If that doesn't work follow the instructions here using the filenames I gave you above.
Compaq CQ57 229WM Froze halway through BIOS update & now have the black screen of death!
