Hi all, I have had a good search and I havent found any similar links.

I have the above laptop and its dead! Nothing. I have tried another battery and another power lead. The Power LED illuminates when the cord is in but it wont boot. I have tried RAM and no joy. I am about to try a CPU as its cheaper than a MOBO.

I was wondering if anyone could give any more technical fault finding help? I have some little knowledge of electronics and I am confident in trying out anything on a PCB level. I just dont know where to start looking for faults. I am prepared to buy a mother board if I can determine it is that.

If anyone give any help on which way to go it would be great.

I would also like to upgrade the CPU so if it turns out it isnt that at least I have Upgraded the CPU if it is the motherboard. I have been looking at this as a upgrade.

I appreciate any help or advice.

Could you be a bit more specific? When you hit the power button do you get the splash screen or is the fan running?

To be honest I thought my first post pretty much highlighted its dead, Yet plugging in the power lead the charging lamp on the notebook illuminates.

Actually, your post said two different things. It had no power and it wouldn't boot (which implies that it has power but it is not starting up or 'powering up'.)

Hence the request for clarification. :)

First thing I usually do is remove memory, hard drive, CD/DVD drive and wireless cards and other accessories easily accessible from the system and then see if the laptop will power up. (Some power supplies protect themselves by shutting down when there is a short circuit on them. Not sure if HP has this but doesn't hurt to try it.) Even though you won't boot up without the memory you should at least hear fans running.

It is also possible that the power switch isn't working anymore or the mechanism that pushes the button is broken. If there is a bezel over the switch perhaps you can pop it off and push the switch directly.

In order to change the bezel (which is attached to the power button, you would need to replace the entire bezel), you need to.

    1. Take off the battery.
    2. Remove all screws underneath the battery.
    3. Take off the keyboard. And ribbon
    4. Take off the bezel (sliding might help). There will also be another ribbon.
