    Hi,

I have almost succesfully downgraded a Compaq CQ62-215DX to Windows XP.

    Just one little bug remains:

According to the HP/Compaq general notebook downgrade guide here ( http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Operat...XP-Downgrade-Guide-for-HP-Laptops/td-p/83267), I should use SoftPaq SP42654 from HP. I did. The WiFi driver installed without complaint. The WiFi soft of (but not completely) works now.

Here's the problem: A connection to an open access point works. A connection to a WPA access point works. A Connection to a WPA2 access point works. However, the most powerful access point in my company's building is WEP, and I cannot connect to the WEP access point. If I try to associate with that access point, the Windows wireless manager does not show (WEP) at the end of the "Security-Enabled wireless network" as the security type, and if I try and asoociate with the access point, I get the "Detecting network type..." window, followed by a dialog box that says "Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again."

It is not a signal quaility issue: My wifi scanner shows a -60dBm signal at my desk (plenty strong).

I think the AR9285 in the Compaq might be a new model, as the notebook box says it only has support for 802.11g and 802.11n (no backwards compatibility to 802.11b). Anyone know where to get a newer XP Atheros AR9285 driver?

Try using Driver Genius Pro and installing the newest driver for your wireless card through that. It gets the drivers directly through the manufacturers and not through OEMs. Therefore, the drivers are actually up to date instead of "up to date" which is actually about a year old.

Hello. I just bought a Compaq CQ62-215DX with windows 7 64 bit. I wiped out the hard drive so I could dual boot ubuntu 10.04 and windows XP 32 bit but I haven't been able to install xp because my windows xp install can't detect my sata hard drive because the installer does not have a sata driver pre loaded to detect my sata hard drive. The mother board on my laptop is AMD/ATI so that means that I need to find an ATI Sata driver. Can you help me figure out how to successfully downgrade to windows xp?

I had a similar problem with my old DV6000. I couldn't just use any old copy of Windows XP, I had to use one with SATA drivers already present. You don't need AMD-specific SATA drivers, just SATA drivers in general. The copy of XP Pro that I used, and still use today, had the Intel SATA drivers slipstreamed into the installer. It worked just fine. Just try to obtain a copy of XP with SATA drivers in general.

Hi, i am also downgrading the same compaq machine, however my issue is different.

I successfully downloaded the video driver and it works "fine" except for one detail, the screen dims out at bootup [and stays like that] and there is no way for me to change that.

Only if i have windows 7 installed does the screen work as intended [well, video], with full brightness and brightness control.

It detects the video driver as AMD880G Mobility Radeon HD 4250 on win XP, driver, like i said, works fine, but the screen is too dark [dim, and no brightness control]. I tried several other drivers and driver mods, no go, only that one seems to do the trick.

On windows 7 it detects the video driver as Mobility Radeon 4200 HD, works without issue [even tho it is probably a 4250, probably uses the same driver anyway].

Another issue is that the keyboard brightness controls are gone on XP, i tried installing the hp button [i forgot the actual name] driver/software, and no go.
Again, windows 7 has no issues.

I fully understand that this machine was not designed for XP and thus incompatibilities are common, but if at all possible, i would like to know how you all managed to get through this without incidents video wise.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just in case, and as above, model is a Compaq CQ62-215DX.

    Thanks in advance!.

I worked on a CQ62-215DX all last weekend and noted a "problem" with the video card and driver. When I formatted the harddrive and installed Windows 7 Home Premium (not from the HP recovery partition but from a Microsoft DVD), everything worked well. But on every reboot, the display would flicker and the Windows 7 logo would slowly slide down the screen. Crazy! After I installed an HP-packaged ATI driver (outdated, of course), everything looked normal. I do not know why that happened, but I can see why ATI advises people to use the driver offered by the manufacturer of the notebook. I did not try a Driverheaven modded driver; maybe later...
