Hi group,
I've got an Evo N610c that shuts down after about two hours. I thought it was temperature related and disassembled the whole laptop to clean it. Guess what, no dust clogs. It runs up until about 50°C (harddrive and cpu)then justs shuts down. The fan runs constantly on AC power as I set that in the BIOS. Any suggestions about what the problem may be? Bad DC to DC converter board? Bad hard drive?
Thank you,
Frank

Just surfing the net usually. I've got a bunch of software loaded. Running XP.

Does it shut down or does it reboot? I would say that you probably have a bad connector somewhere. -

No, it doesn't reboot, it justs shuts down. For some reason, when the hard drive and cpu temps(which I monitor) reach around 50°C, I can predict that "it's going to shut down soon", and it does. I don't see a reason why it would be software related. I've got the laptop on a table in pieces and didn't notice any loose connections when I dismantled it.

That's odd. The CPU on my nw8440 constantly idles around 50C, and it's shot up over 70C during intense 3D activities. On the other hand, the HD has never gone beyond 47C. Perhaps the thermal cut-off is lower on your n610C?
Try using a cooler/chill pad to see if that lowers the temps. If your machine still shuts down after 2 hours, you probably got some spyware on your machine. I agree with CCleaner; also run Spybot: Search & Destroy, and AdAware, and see what you get. If you surf with Internet Explorer, I wouldn't be surprised if you have tons of spyware loaded. -
What kind of spyware would cause a system shutdown? I've never heard of that.

Might not be spyware. Could be that you've just got too much "stuff" installed and have compatibility issues. Only takes a few minutes to scan your machine to be sure, though. And CCleaner is very fast and thorough - especially for a freebie.

No, I don't have too much "stuff" installed. I'm not a download junkie. I've got McAfee Enterprise virus protection along with Spybot running on XP Pro. I really don't think it's spyware. I think it's a hardware or system board type of problem.
Compaq EVO N610c shuts down in 2 hrs.
