I have recently aquired a Compaq Evo N610c, and on the whole, I'm very happy with it - particularly the support still offered by HP.
However, one thing that concerns me is that Notebook Hardware Control repeatedly gives me warnings about the hard drive temperature when I am putting the system through anything above a minor load.
Is it normal for this model of noetbook to be reporting a temperature higher than 60C (140F)? As it stands, I am considering upgrading the hard drive - is there a specific brand/model I should look at for lower operating temperatures?
Finally, if anyone can recommend any "magic" notebook utilities to reduce hard drive use and therefore temperature, or anything else that may help in my situation, that would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Whoa... That's getting a little toasty in there.
Most drives are designed to run at 35-45c. They can take workloads up to 65-70c without failing. But even for a CPU with heatsink and fan cooling, I wouldn't like to see it get much higher.
Your software may be reporting a wrong temp, too.
If your drive is really that hot, you should be able to feel it through the laptop chassis. Pull off the hard drive access panel and feel the thing- if you whip your fingers back from the heat it would probably be time to get it out of there.
If you are going to replace it may I recommend Hitachi Travelstar 2.5" drives as a good choice? Those are OEM for many, many manufacturers and are usually very affordable. newegg has a good selection

I know this thread is a little old, but i wanted to add my .02 in case anyone is searching for answers, i have a evo n610c the hard drive is located very very close to the cpu heatsink and it gets very very hot. i recommend a cooler base to keep everything cool. if you dont you could bake the harddrive believe me i have killed 3 of them in this laptop.
