I recently bought a compaq laptop and it's starting to act up. Vista. It keeps saying that there's a start up error. It asks me Launch start up repair, so I do so. The repair goes great, but the problem still happens. I tried using those restore discs i created when i first got the thing, but it still happens. So, what should I do? I am not going to pay $30 for recovery discs from compaq.

Check your HDD with chkdsk for failure.

how do I do that? ANy other suggestions?

you can get into the BIOS by tapping F10 when it is turning on. then go over to diagnostics and run a primary hard disk test. the quick test lasts 2 min while comprehensive lasts anywhere from50-100 min depending on hdd size. and you can run a recovery off the hdd by tapping f11 during boot so you don't have to pay for disks
