Has anyone come across a review of this model? Thanks.
-
I ordered one on 1/30/05. Should have it in a week or so.
edit: ...but I guess that doesn't really answer your question does it? I didn't find any reviews when I was looking around. In fact, nowhere on HP's website or anywhere else could I find the exact specification for the memory (PC2700). I pretty much knew what it had to be but I just wanted to be sure because I ordered some elsewhere to throw in as soon as I got it. These models are new so it will be a little time. One nice thing about them is that these use the new Dothan core Celeron Ms, which are manufactured on a 90nm process as opposed to the Banias derived chips' 130nm process. Being built on the smaller process should lower heat output. The new chip also has 1MB of L2 cache, opposed to 512KB.
I have a powerful desktop for home use so I ordered the basics on this one, but I think I'll be happy with it. -
Thanks for the input. Will appreciate your comments on the machine once you have a chance to work with it.

Well I received my M2000 today, so if anyone has questions or would like some pictures go ahead and reply.

I've looked everywhere and haven't found any reviews for this notebook yet.

What kind of battery life are you getting with the M2000?

Ok I busted this out quicklike at night. This isn't pullitzer material but here it is.
After having the M2000 for a day I am pleased so far with my purchase. I got a barebones model, because I have a powerful desktop system at home. I basically bought the laptop for internet and office apps while away from home.
The specs for mine are:
XP Home
Intel Celeron M 350 1.3GHz (Dothan core - 1MB L2 cache! and 90nm process)
15" 1024x768
512MB ddr333 (256 x 2) I ordered the 2nd stick from newegg and stuck it in before i turned it on the first time
40GB 4200rpm hard drive
8x DVD-ROM
56k modem 10/100 nic
Broadcom 54G b/g w/125HSM/speedbooster
6 Cell battery
1 pcmcia
2 USB 2.0 (1 left/right)
VGA out
firewire port
Listed at 6.29
Got it for $635 with academic discount and after rebate, a good deal to me
Oh - add $32 or so for the 2nd stick of ram from newegg
I was expecting 3 USB and no firewire, oh well. I would of liked an s-video port, but am ok w/o it. You had to pay $150 more for a pentium just to be able to pay $25 to add the port. Makes no sense to me.
The size is average for a 15" mainstreamer. I just didn't want a 10 pounder, I have no problems carrying this machine at ~6.5 pounds. Some may think that's heavy. To them others may say go to the gym.
The design is fairly simple and clean, and I like it. You can see my pics for yourself. The build quality on this is better than the Dells I frequently see. (600m, 8100, and latitude D600) The dells are creaky and bendy whereas this feels sturdy and solid. There is a very slight flex to the keyboard, but it does not bother me at all. I wish there were a light to acknowledge the ac cord being plugged in, my last compaq which was a 2800 had it. By the way the 2800 I had was great, and so was my experience with Compaq support, which helped me decide to buy another.
I haven't had a chance to test battery life yet, partly because it's not a large concern of mine. As a rough guess I would say a tiny bit past 2 hours with wireless and full brightness surfing the web. That could be a little optimistic though. The 12 cell is available if you need it and don't mind the protrusion.
Almost forgot performance. For surfing and office apps etc., this thing works just fine. Don't really notice a difference between it and my 2.4GHz overclocked AMD desktop with 1GB of RAM. So if that's all you need I wouldn't hesitate to buy this, or something with similar specs. I believe spending any more on a processor for web surfing would have been silly. Having 512MB of RAM is important. Having less is what will be the biggest detriment to performance.
Screen: Clear and bright enough for me, no complaints. Maybe later I will set it next to my friends' dells for comparison.
Any more questions let me know.[][

Nice pics, thanks rbush83. It looks so much like the V2000, its scary.

I ordered this laptop of hpshopping.com. It should be coming any day now. The pictures were great. The thing I noticed is the colors are completly different form hp's website. The computer looks like a metalic black there, and a silver in your pictures. Hp really should put up more pictures or a 3D demo. I almost didnt order this laptop because I couldnt see what it looked like from thier site.

I just wanted to say thank you for the pics and mini review.
FYI, hpshopping is now offering a $50 instant rebate on the m2000. Like I priced out rbush83's config with the APP discount and now it's $50 cheaper. Hpshopping has a 30 day price match guarantee. -
how much m2000 is similar to v2000?
does m2000 have this 6in1 memory reader? -
can you guys comment on compaq m2000's fan noise and heat output? i'm also interested in purchasing a compaq m2000/hp ze2000 but still on the fence due to the lack of reviews. thanks in advance.
