Was curious if anyone can give me some advice between the 2 of these laptops. Can get them set up about the same with the Compaq being a bit cheaper. Not sure which one would be better. The R3000T is also comparable to these price wise. I am leaning more toward the zx5000 but haven't heard much about the Compaqs. Also, how does the Athlon processor compare to the pentium? Thanks

The zx5000 and R3000T have the better graphics of the two. With my configuration I found that the zx5000 is about 50.00 cheaper than the same R3000T. In case you want to compare it what I'm looking at getting is the zx5000 with 512Ram, 40gb HD, 802.11g, 2.4ghz, 8xDVD (since on my desktop I already have cd-rw and dvd+/- rw), 15.4", and the 64mb Radeon 9600.

One thing to consider when considering HP and Compaq in general is that HP actually owns and opperates Compaq. Usually what happens in a situation like this is that the parent company (HP) usually leaches technology and support away from the secondary company (Compaq). HP has a little better support and better quality then the Compaq's in general. Either machine you named is a good machine and would be a good choice. If it comes down to a tie in your decision making process then maybe you can consider what I have said. Either way good luck with your decision.

I think they have pretty much the same stuff in it.. except the processor is a tiny bit higher inthe second one. Why is it worth 300 bucks more? -
I suggested that as it saves you alot of money and no tax.....Plus they are very quick to ship. And you can build it to your specific specs.Check it out!
quote:

I would seriously recommend. DO NOT BUY that computer at that store. If you buy the exact same computer except it has a 2.8 mobile instead of a 2.66 from www.shopping.hp.com it is much cheaper.
Compaq R3000T Shared:
If you sign up for student discount and use PC2039 for an addional 10% off. It comes to 1384.62 - 10% = 1246.16 - 100.00 mail in rebate = 1146.16 no tax, but 52.xx shipping 5 - 7 days and 62.xx shipping 2 days.
HP zv5000
Same stuff
1338.56 - 10% = 1204.70 - 100.00 mail in rebate = 1104.70 no tax but same shipping.
So I would def put up with something else or work around it to same yourself a lot of money.
I just thought of something. That will only work if you can get it shipped to a friend in the US. from HP's canada site it is the same price as that store. So your best bet would be to find some way to get it in the US. -

thats what i was thinking, but i dont know nayone who lives close to the border. i have a friend in arizona, but if he sends it from ther,e im going to have to pay duties AND taxes.. so id end up gettin screwed.. hah.
i decided to jus save up a bit more and wait for a different model to come out. -
Yeah, besides paying taxes and shipping you would also, have to send it back to that friend whenever you wanted it serviced since your not supposed to export the laptops.

I spent some time today looking over the Compaq R3000 next to the HP Pavillion zv5000 (which I originally was most interested in.) But after comparing the two, I found the Compaq to appear sturdier (eg: steel clasp instead of plastic on the lid, the molduing more solid and the lid less flimsy.) The Compaq was also thinner, which I think is a benefit with respects to wrist positioning. But I'm wondering if I'm sacraficing performance and/or reliablity with the Comapaq? I'm looking for the most powerful option out there with a great screen. I also want reliable tech support--even if that costs more. (Quikster, you seem to know a lot about these 2 options. Can you advise?)

The dual clasps on the zx5000 are metal not plastic.
The only other real difference between the two is speakers. The zx5000 has the better speakers of the two. However, if you don't care about this then get whichever one you think looks better as they are the same internals.

Someone asked Intel vs. AMD. After months of research, staying up late, and all, it seems AMD is a better bet. They are easier to contact, have responded to all my emails, have shorter data pipelines, do not sell on the 'megahertz myth'(please see http://www.guardian.co.uk/online/story/0,3605,658968,00.html ), are pushing ahead (in terms of 64-bit processors, research them, they are the future...), and are cheaper too in general. I'm definitely going AMD. No offense, Intellies.

Which one of the two machines would you guys recommend????

Billy,
The ZX, ZV & R series notebooks are all based on the same platform. They are almost the same unit with a different shell. There are some slight config differences and then you can also customize additional features, like CPU, HDD, LCD, etc... So, generally, they're all good units, you just need to find something that fits what you're going to be doing with the unit. The usual things you should get in a unit, would be a decent video card with dedicated video memory, 5400rpm HDD or faster, at least 512MB memory & a good LCD.
