To explain what I'm talking about here are 2 reviews about these laptops :

    Compaq Presario 900 Notebook Review
    Compaq's Evo N1015v notebook

From what I know , these laptops are quite the same . I've had an EVO for the last 2 years but it has a problem , it won't start unless I press on it (close to the touchpad) to bend the mainboard a little to get a contact to be made . I have to keep it pressed like this at all times to make it work . I've checked it more than 4 times ... the problem it's on the mainboard but nothing seems to be out of place or loose ...

Last week I've got a chance to buy a Presario 900 in perfect shape . But this laptop had only an AthlonXP Mobile 1500+ while my EVO had an AthlonXP Mobile 2200+ . Also it had no floppy drive and a 14" LCD unlike my old EVO that had a 15" one .

So I've said to myself that if the laptops are quite the same , I would take the CPU AthlonXP Mobile 2200+ from my EVO and install it into the Presario 900 . Also I would switch the whole module that contains the touchpad and the floppy drive installing the one from the EVO (that had the floppy drive) onto the Presario 900 that had no floppy drive and no gap to install one .

Also I would switch the LCD screens taking the 15" one from the EVO and installing it onto the Presario 900 .

    1) I've switched the LCD screens and they work perfectly . My Presario 900 has now a 15" LCD monitor taken from the EVO .

    2) I've switched the whole module that contains the floppy drive and the touchpad . The floppy drive is powered but it's not detected by the BIOS or any OS . :(

    3) I've switched the CPUs installing the AthlonXP Mobile 2200+ into the Presario 900 replacing the old AthlonXP Mobile 1500+ . BUT IT ISN'T WORKING :( !!! The Presario 900 wouldn’t boot or display anything with the AthlonXP Mobile 2200+ .

I've even switched the BIOS chips , taking the BIOS chip from the EVO and installing it into the Presario 900 but it wouldn't go with the AthlonXP Mobile 2200+ .

And yes , the BIOS chip from the EVO works ok on the Presario 900 with the old AthlonXP Mobile 1500+ CPU . So the problem it's just that the Presario 900 wouldn't take the AthlonXP Mobile 2200+ in as an upgrade .

The 2 major questions are :

    I. Why doesn't the AthlonXP Mobile 2200+ work on the Presario 900 and how could I get it to work ???

II.Why isn't the floppy drive from the EVO being detected by the Presario 900 ???

The AXPM 2200+ might not be compatible with the motherboard used in the Presario 900. Check the markings on the motherboard to see if there are any differences in terms of version/revision numbers between the Evo and the 900. The older Presario 900 motherboard might just not be capable of supporting the voltages required to run the AXPM 2200+. I would suspect the motherboard could also be the issue with the floppy drive not working. The floppy connectors might be present on the motherbord but if its not connected to anything it obviously wont work.
