    okay I just bought a Compaq Presario CG62 laptop last night from bestbuy. I deleted all the bloatware now my question is do I really need all the Microsoft visual c++ updates??? And is it really necessary to have java 6 update update 17 ( 64 bit ) when I have update 21????

    You don't need the older Java update, but certain applications may require specific versions of the Visual C++ runtime. Since the latter are small in size, I would not worry about them.
