I have problem with Compaq Presario F500, when I press the power
button, leds light up for a second and switch off.
Sometimes when I press fast and few times power buton, cpu fan works
for a while, and the leds light up about 15 sec.and switch off again.
When computer was in function, and when it gone into
the sleep mode (power save mode) it has to "brutally" switched off -
because computer didn't respond any command from keyboard (ctrl+alt+del) .

I found that problems usually happens on this model (Compaq Presario
F500)- heating problems caused that...and because of that HP suggest
to upgrade the BIOS (for better fan control).

I try to power on only with CPU and RAM, disconnected batery,LCD,HDD,DVD,all cards...but nothing change, only leds blinks for a second. On the motherboard I have 3.3V and 5 V...CMOS battery ok...

P.S. I dont try to change processor (AMD) because I dont have another one.

    Any help or suggestion, please?

    (sorry for my english)

    Best regards!

Hate to be a troll, but anybody find a solution to this? I tried the limited warranty enhancement once. It fixed the wireless, but not the sleep problem. Now HP is telling me that it doesn't apply to the sleep problem... I've heard that this only affects AMD processors on these laptops. And yes, the laptop DOES run hot... It's burning up on my lap right now and it's almost 100 degrees outside. *growls at HP's stupid laptop*

i called into Compaq because my f500 screen went blank. i was told it needed to be repaired and would cost $400.00. However, if I purchased a new computer, the manager would authorize a free repair!

After doing some research, I found out that there was a recall and HP had to fix for free. the support tech called my house on for separate occasions trying to get me to buy a new laptop to receive his free repair.

    Awful customer service

did you get it figured out? My fan on my Presario F500 never comes on. I was wondering if some kind of thermostat control, bad fan, or bios issue.

any help from your experience is helpful

    thanks

I just got off the phone with someone at HP and went round and round with him telling me that the limited warranty for the "free" repair expired on May for this very issue. I am so very mad  at HP for the terrible laptop products that they push out to the public. I have had my F500 series for ONLY 2 years and I shouldn't be having these problems. I have had a desktop for over 9 years and don't have near the problems that I have with my laptop. I have experienced EVERY single one of the problems with my F500 series as all of you have mentioned and HP isn't going to do a thing about the repairs. Wanting me to pay them $400 for the repairs! AS IF! I promptly told them that I could buy a BRAND NEW laptop for that price. If anyone knows of a way to get these repairs done without spending a small fortune, I would appreciate a little info.

I too just got off the phone with these bandits. I was told that because I checked on my online registration that I didn't want to receive e-mail updates I wasn't informed of the recall that I would have received via e-mail.
The cost was $289.00 for the new motherboard, plus diagnostics, and shipping and so on which I'm sure brings the numbers to what these other hard working people who were swindled by HP are stating. I think we should go on an active internet crusade to get a class action suit against them. I couls see if it was my fault, but they admit it was a product defect and you can visithttp://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01480071&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN and read it for yourself. Let's just not take it laying down...

Good idea, except with class action lawsuits the lawyers get the big bucks and customers just get pocket change.

I recommend suing in small claims court, whether or not your warranty has expired. Sue for not honoring the warranty, if still under it, and for false advertising, unfair business practices and manufacturing a defective product if outside warranty. Everyone expects a laptop to last longer than one year and HP certainly implies that in its advertising. And many states have statutes where you can be awarded double or triple damages for unfair business practices if the court finds in your favor.

If HP told the truth, they would have to put out this disclaimer: "We design many of our laptop models to just get past the warranty period. Most customers can expect some component to fail soon after the warranty expires."

HP would have to pay a lawyer to show up at all of these court proceedings nationwide. They won't bother if you are not suing for a lot of money, such as the cost of a laptop or cost of repair, plus expenses. If a HP rep does not show, you win by default, before the judge even looks at the merits of your case. Even if by some remote chance they show up and you lose, you'd just be out the filing fee (usually around $30-$40 depending on your state) and your time. Make sure you include the cost of the filing fee in your claim.

I sued and it was pretty painless. HP called me few days before the court date and agreed to send me a check for the amount I claimed. Obviously, they weren't planning to show up and figured they'd be better off without a judgment against them (guess various consumer groups keep track of those things). I had gone nowhere for several months with HP repair about a defective heatsink and defective repair on a 2 week old laptop.

I agree with vertical. I am actually suing in small claims court in New York City. My case is Feb 25th and I am suing for the cost of the laptop and items rendered useless as a result and 3 months of lost productivity ($75).

If you need help on how to sue, go to hplies.com.

I also sent an email to mark hurd and francesca rude (an hp customer rep) before and after I filed my case. I'm willing to settle out of court within reason.

The Compaq F500, F700 and G6000 all use the same motherboard, so why not recall all of them ? Corporate greed -_-. Ah well. Suing them is the only way to get them to talk!

I had this problem with my Compaq F572US (similar to F500) and I initially also thought it was the mobo that was fried. Called hp and they declined to fix it (even though they had a hidden recall) because it was a few months after the 2 year warranty expired.

Long story short, the problem with the laptop really had to do with the sleep mode. Something went wrong when it went into sleep mode and it wouldn't turn on. The power light would come on for a second, sometimes even the fan would come on with the power light but the LCD stayed blank. Anyways, I kept pressing the power button a few times a day and one day it magically turned on. I also pressed the Function key with the LCD/display key (is it #3 or #4, don't remember) and I don't know if it even had anything to do with it. Anyways, this has happened to me twice and it took days and weeks to get the laptop back to running. The final solution for me was to disable the sleep mode completely so the laptop would never ever go into sleep mode again. I have since also updated the bios. See my detailed post here for more details:

Just wanted to help out others having this same issue. Everyone, please propoagate this fix I am posting and please spread it around. I registered on this forum just to post this here and my request to each of you who benefit from this is to do the same at other forums. Hate to see these laptops being thrown away because of people assuming all such failures have to do with the mobo recall.

    Hope this helps!

Incase anyone is still struggling with this issue, a great DIY method to sneak a tiny bit more life out of laptops affected by this:
