I've had the Presario for over an year now and for the past month or so, I'm facing an issue with the Battery ( 6 cell Li-ion).

Problem is, even when there is about 25% battery remaining( I'm running Windows Vista Basic), the laptop just powers off . It won't start unless I plug in the power supply.

Is this a problem with the battery or is it the OS that's displaying incorrect charge information?

    I'd appreciate suggestions!

    Cheers

Does it shut off instantly or does windows try to shut down first?

It seems the battery has lost its calibration. I suggest you read the battery guide

You will need to cycle your battery every 2 months or so to calibrate the battery back to the right percentage. You do this by charging the battery fully and discharging it close to 3%
