The laptop has a 60gb hd right now and I want to install a higher capacity.Compaq/HP chat told me that I can only use a 60gb,but the spec sheet says I can go up to a 120gb 4200rpm IDE.There is even a part number for it,407853-001. Could I not just get an IDE hard drive without having to get their part number hd? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Yes, you can get any 2.5" IDE HDD of any capacity. Even a 5400 RPM IDE drive for a nice boost in speed.

Thanks 2.0,you answered a question nobody could for a week.Much appreciated. :D One more thing,I have been told not to format a new hard drive to the full capacity, something about this bios.Ex.only format a 160gb to 137 or bios will not recognize it or something.Any ideas?

That might be a possible limitation of the motherboard/BIOS. Best bet would be to partition the drive with a 130GB partition and a 30GB partition. Then install windows. After that's done, you can try to merge the partitions by extending the 130GB volume into the 30 GB via the storage tool in administrative tools in windows.
