Hello
Is Compaq Presario 2517 Al a reliable model? Please advice Also 2513Al
I'm new to notebooks. Are comaq notebooks notorious for any hardware problems? Would IBM be a better buy? Please advice
Thanks in advance

Compaq units are geared toward business users and no, they've not had a terrible quality problem of late. Comparing them to IBM though is tough. IBM is more or less the gold standard when it comes to notebook quality. You might post a topic in the general hardware forum with your needs and budget for help outside of HP/Compaq.

Also, though the price range is what will kill you. Emachines and HP/Compaq are the best bang for the buck, however if you want the top of the line quality you will pay for it through IBM or a small set down to Fujitsu. It's about what you are willing to pay for and what you need. I have a HP zx5000 and couldn't be happier, however I know this model is not for everyone. Partly due to others needs/desires and partly because of what people have heard or past experience. You will most likely do fine with the compaq as long as you treat it like it is, an expensive piece of technology that shouldn't be just tossed about carelessly. If you take good care of it and it fits your needs you should be happy.

Thanks to all of you for your reply! I wonder- did you mean that Compaq units are in general less sturdy than others?
One more thing. If one can afford it, would pentium systems be better than celeron since there is probably stricter quality control in their manufacture?
Thanks

I mean IBM is business oriented and they have extra heavy duty casings that can handle being dropped and what not. The compaqs are no flimsier than anything else in their price range (sony, dell, gateway, emachines), but they did have some problems in the past (3 years ago or so before HP bought them out). Since the merger though I don't know of many major complaints against them.
As to the processor, Pentium is way better than any celeron. Celeron is almost the worst processor one could purchase. Its just a bottom of the line processor that can perform simple computing. It will never be as fast or as powerful as a Pentium or AMD processor. -
I've never purchased a laptop before, & I'm thinking of purchasing an Compaq/HP, but my dealer is supplying the laptop with the OS (Windows XP Pro) without the original Windows XP CD included.
If I need to install hadware devices etc, won't I need the Windows CD for drivers? Is this the accepted practice? To supply a laptop without a Windows CD?
All they are supplying me is a "rescue CD". Will this suffice?
Thanks in advance.! -
When you buy the OS you should receive the media. I'd be a little concerned if they don't offer you a CD. It could be that all the needed files are on the recovery disk, but I'm not sure.
