Hi guys,
Just under 2 years ago i purchased a Compaq r4125CA (just a pre bundled version of the r4000). The only changes i have made in this time is to upgrade one of the 512MB to a gig stick of ram and also replace the stock 4200rpm 100gb drive with a 7200 60gb drive.
The problem i have is mostly during gaming, more specifically world of warcraft. The laptop can handle the game fine and it is totally playable. However if i feel the air coming out of the fans it is really really hot. To the point where the game will start slowing right down, and eventually it will usually either freeze, or shut down by itself. Im pretty sure its a heat issue. I installed mobimeter (i think thats what its called) and the temps were getting up to about 80degrees C when playing the game !!!! it was idling anywhere between 50-60 degrees C. I find these really high.
The trouble is i assume i am outside of my warranty period. I spoke with compaq tech support with online chat and they had me update the bios to the latest version. Unfortunately it is still running very hot.
It never used to do this this frequently, and it is now starting to do it when running simple desktop applications, eg. Powerpoint and what not.
Anyone got any suggestions? Is this a hardware fault? What am i looking at to have Compaq look at this cost wise?
Anyone else come up against this type of heat issue? I am using it on a flat surface (office desk) and have blown out the fans of dust etc. many times. I believe the fan to be working as it should as i can feel like speed up significantly when under any load (sounds like an airplane taking off whilst playing games)
Thanks for any thoughts, suggestions and insights in advance !

Perhaps a notebook cooler might be useful.

thanks for the reply. I was hoping to avoid a cooling pad. The way i see it the laptop should work as is without any additional purchases. I think the pad would make it less portable. Having said that has anyone got any opinions on the cooling pads, would they drop my temperatures by any significant amount?

Odds are the CPU heatsink fins are due for cleaning, if the fan runs 24x7. Unfortunately HP made that more difficult in the R4000 series than the R3000. You could try using a vacuum cleaner around the fan intake and exhaust, hopefully that won't loosen anything.
You might want to try undervolting with CrystalCPUID or RMClock. You can generally knock 0.2V off at max speed, which does wonders for power consumption.
